To think us shop assistants can't win :(

If you don't have a conversation with the customer you are rude, if you try and have a conversation you are being overfriendly, if you offer a bag you are being silly as how else are you meant to carry your shopping (I ask because we charge for them).

If we ask for ID we are being jobsworths!

I ask if I don't know because I don't want to be fined, lose my job and certainly don't want to go to jail!

I am just trying to do my job, and be polite and try and give good customer service.

I just feel like we are looked down on and can't win whatever we do!

I am a sad person who likes to do my big shop at 9:30 on a sunday morning. Obviously most sensible people know the tills do not open until ten. Recently there was this total wanker having a right go at some poor woman "no chance of actually being HELPFUL, no no love you just sit there," etc. He kept looking round as if expecting support from other people waiting patiently by tills. Stupid wanker.

YANBU. i'm a shop assistant and i get grief pretty much every shift. i once told a customer the wait for create-your-own pizzas would be thirty minutes because there was a queue of 15 orders before him, and he threw the order form in my face and told me i was "fucking useless". charming.

i also had a customer ask me where the dill was, and then she goes "dill? D-I-L-L, it's a herb, you may not have heard of it" -_-

Been lucky so far use to work in Argos man the people I swear use to think we made the items! Yes we have staff down in the basement putting it all together Hmm and could be downright rude at asda it's been ok odd 1 or 2 after Xmas was fun doing all the markdowns Grin crazy crazy people!

CharltonHairstyle · 21/02/2013 20:05

YANBU
I have fallen out with the general public. I've had to serve some really nasty, spiteful people recently.

We get 'rated' after the transaction, most people are very happy...some say awful things, most of which are untrue...and it affects our pay! Sometimes it really bothers me, it's very personal as you see the comments that are left. Like I say, 99% are lovey to read and are from happy customers.

Thanks to all who have been so help to us!!
You are great!

mrsjay · 21/02/2013 20:18

Yes but you only need to employ 1 person to man 4 machines. That's 3 jobs out the window.

I spose you are right,

LRDtheFeministDragon · 21/02/2013 20:23

Another one here very happy to be ID'd.

It's highly unlikely any of them are MNers but the lovely friendly people in my local corner shop, deli and florist regularly cheer me up no end. They are truly lovely.

dangly131 · 21/02/2013 20:27

I once witnessed 2 shoppers in front of me try and use a coupon which had previously been used. The shop assistant told them it could not be used again and they proceeded to swear and shout abuse while unloading the whole of their shopping in front of my trolley onto the floor. All this for the sake of 30p off a tin of beans! The assistant was very apologetic to me having to wait while they moved these people and their goods to which I told her I believed that toddlers could accept 'no' more than some adults around here and was disgusted in the way she was spoken to.

akaemmafrost · 21/02/2013 20:28

I never moan about retail assistants no matter what their attitude because I would HATE to do that job for ten minutes let alone 8 plus hours a day. To be fair though I have never really come across a really unpleasant one.

notsofrownieface · 21/02/2013 20:28

I do often think, when I have had a particularly arsey cunstomer if it will end up on here Grin.

VitoCorleone · 21/02/2013 20:39

I used to work in a fast food restaurant, i would never work in that sort of job again, people can be fucking rude.

MadBraLady · 21/02/2013 20:41

I love being ID'd! I'm not so keen on the bit where you take a closer look and then say "Actually, don't worry" though Grin

SirBoobAlot · 21/02/2013 20:48

YANBU. You just can't win.

Working behind the counter has made me a nicer customer at least.

littlemisssunny · 21/02/2013 22:20

I work for a big chain in the food hall and cafe and its made me a lot more understanding when all the tables aren't cleared etc when I go elsewhere.

I still hate bad service and people are right to complain about it, but when they complain about things when we are just doing our job, I get annoyed!
