To want to write for the Daily Mail?

I'd quite like to get paid for writing a load of inflammatory fluff based on dubious right wing opinions. It looks like money for old rope.

The celebrity articles would also be a piece of piss. You don't even need to be able to spell or use correct grammar - if the state of them is anything to go by.

I suspect most writers are taking the piss and don't even believe what they write (I hope to God they don't). I could make that stuff up too and it would probably be amusing for a while, at least.

AIBU to want to puruse the career path of a Daily Mail 'journalist'? If IANBU, how do I go about it?

Have any of you seen the Express? That's even worse than the Mail....

The DM is very easy to get hold of abroad, at least in France and Spain - the only other English language newspapers so widely available are the FT and International Herald Tribune, which are both aimed at a, erm, different readership.

This added to the fact that many expats like to get together in English speaking communities andnbitch about why they left the UK and wind each other up with horror stories based on what happened to a friend of a friend could explain why there are so many bigoted comments on there from expats.

I have some particularly bad memories of discussions with expats in various parts of rural France who seemed to base their entire outlook on life on the Daily Mail.

PetiteRaleuse · 21/02/2013 17:35

The same expats sit there whining about how French France is, or how Spanish Spain is, and how annoying it is having to shout at the locals to get them to understand Hmm

YABU Smile I shudder to think what they think, OP.

Oooh, ooh I would LOVE to

Can I try:

"I am amazing good looking which is why there are so many immigrants. I hate all mothers, in fact, all women. I am one myself but I'm a "mans woman" so I sleep with all my friends husbands.

Most immigrants are paedos by the way.

I love the Royal Family, Diana was a saint. I like her, but not other women, who are totes evil. And fat. Look at that fat woman. I hate her. I bet she either stayed at home to raise children or left them and went out to work. Both of which are evil and causes aids in british wildlife.

I know a fat woman with 19 kids by 23 fathers who lives in a mansion in Belgravia and gets free swan for dinner. 21 of the 23 fathers are immigrants, all are on benefits and she had a boob job on the NHS.

We'll be under Sharia law by 2015 and our children will all speak only polish

By the way I am stupidly attractive and live in a dirty house with loads of shit under my sofa. My boyfriend is totes a rockstar. Please by my exercise dvd"

I wrote an article once for them. It was kind of sub contracted from a freelance journalist who was supposed to be writing it. She knew me from another forum and asked me to write something, the idea been that she'd do a bit of editing and the intro and the main piece would be my writing. They offered me a good price and then without asking once they saw the finished article added quite a bit more to my fee as they hadn't really had to do anything to it.

I'm a bit ashamed to admit it now. I knew how the DM would want it to read/angle of article, etc and just wrote it in a "DM journalist" style and it obviously hit the mark. I certainly exaggerated it in places to get the DM spin on it. I think it was 3000 words and I wrote it in an afternoon!

I've since written stuff for the Sunday Times.....or was it Telegraph - who pay shit, and the Daily Mirror who pay teh best out of all three of them.

Viva - I know we've had this conversation before but the Daily Mirror pay absolutely fuck all. In fact they are notorious for never paying - as are the Guardian.

So if you got a big fee out of them then you did well. You're also a one off.

VivaLeBeaver · 21/02/2013 17:53

Honestly, they paid me £900....possibly £800 but one of those. DM paid £700 and whichever broadsheet it was I think paid £200 AND they asked me to write for them but said they might not use it and if they didn't then they wouldn't pay me at all which I thought was odd when they were the ones who asked me to do the work.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/02/2013 17:55

Russell Howard is hilarious on the Daily Express:

"If only Diana was here". Grin

CarpetBagger · 21/02/2013 18:06

"Alternatively just write it and post it here - cut out the middle man.
MN effectively reproduces the entire paper every single day in various thread form. " [grin} @ nancy 66

I think Nancy thats because alot of MN read it on line, and only fess up when they are truelly shocked by something and have to link to it - with lots of - " sorry - links to daily fail" etc!!!!

Bunfags · 21/02/2013 18:10

Shocked at the Guardian being shoddy about paying up. Especially considering it's a news paper for people who want to be all middle class and ethical and wear (expensive) Fair Trade museli recycled under garments.

Gosh it would be so much fun. I visit my mum once a week and she rants about everything and pretty much 95% of it can be traced to the Daily Mail. It would be such fun if she ranted about an article I had written. I don't think you are being unreasonable op, I think the DM are going to get a rush to new would be writers.

Viva - that must have been Sunday Times. They are stingy. Telegraph is pretty good.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 21/02/2013 18:27

guardian and nobserver absolutely notorious for using students who want clippings, it's supposed to be an honour just to get your name in there... Hmm

Bunfags · 21/02/2013 18:49

I can imagine AitchTwoOhOneTwo. They are probably run by champagne socialists. They sit there in their Grand Designs style eco-mansions, with their beards... chuffing on about social mobility and sustainable communities. Don't be fooled! They're paying people to write their article for less than minimum wage!!! They really might as well get down on their knees and suck David Cameron off and admit to their capitalist ways. Grin

It's a conspiracy I tell you, and benefit claimants, public sector workers, working mothers, SAHM and immigrants are probably to blame for this. Bring back the workhouses!

Guardian Media Group own loads, including local papers. They are really twatty. They closed down several smaller papers in Greater Manchester, and made loads of people redundant.
