Hairdressers apparently charge by the hour. I am outraged. AIBU?

Staying at my mother's. DD aged 2 needed a haircut. Dropped into one in the High Street, they said they could fit her in, and that it would depend how long it took but £10 or more. Fine, I thought. Probably £15 max. Oh no, £23. Apparently it took 30 minutes. I assume they took off the time that she spent washing off someone else's colour while we waited....!

Feel totally conned. At home, they charge by age - i.e., 2 years = £2, or the barber shop charges about £8.

I am gutted. I hate spending money unnecessarily and never imagined it would be £23. I am also really cross with them.

AIBU? I know they didn't give me an exact quote, but £23 is a fortune. I didn't tip.

Depends where it is I think. I know Supercuts always give a quote beforehand as its the only salon my autistic son will set foot in.....and as he's over 8 he gets charged the adult price (actually...scratch that, it's ME that gets charged the adult price). It's usually about £14 for him and I think £23 sounds a lot for a child's haircut....

I wouldn't have agreed to a haircut without them telling me the exact price.

I've never heard of a hairdresser charging by the hour. Wherever I have gone they always charge a set price.

Most hairdressers will give you a price for a child's haircut no matter how long it takes. £23 is excessive for a tots cut!

Was it a very posh place? Might be worth checking with them if the price you were charged is correct.

I've been in a lot of salons, barbers and know a fair few, never heard of this in my puff.

I also never heard of the age = £ thing either though!

£23 sounds expensive, was it a very swanky place with no real desire to do childrens hair and they've charged their normal trim rate?

My sister took her 5 year old dd to a supercuts for a trim and they charged her £23!! When she queried it they said it said from £5 on the poster and it was 22 because they had to trim the fringe Hmmshe paid aswell,i would have walked out laughing

£23 sounds expensive but depends where it is tbh.

Tbf they did say £10 or more - you decided £15 max.My salon charges £12 in the week for kids but a Saturday is £24 iirc.

That is outrageous!

My hairdresser is quite expensive but he trims my fringe for free in between cuts, and only charges £15 for DD and she is 13 and is Rapunzel!

that's very odd

I pay £25 but I have a senior stylist (I've been with her for years and she progressed up the ladder)

but for a child, that's extortionate.

Oh and they do fringes for free. . .

I'd expect to pay less than that for my hair being trimmed. And compared to the typical two year old, I am Rapunzel! People sometimes think I'm a member of the Plymouth Brethren!

Unless her hair was very difficult to work with for some reason that is an obscene amount, unless it was some sort of celebrity hairdresser?

Wow, I'm shocked by all these prices. I take my 2 yr old dd and myself for a dry cut. It's £15 for me and they don't normally charge for dd. I must be very lucky.
