At the zoo today, penguin feeding time. Only 12 children could be chosen to actually feed the penguins, there were loads of children who didn't get the chance.
One who did get picked was a little lad of about three near us, he was given a fish to feed the penguins but was so enthralled he just stood staring at them but not feeding them.
Another mum nearby then says to his Mum, 'He's not even feeding the penguins. My two want to feed them, get him out, he's wasting time.'
The other mum (very sensibly) ignored her, and the woman then began to speak loudly to her two sons about 'VERY SELFISH PEOPLE.'
I was Shock and my two got the giggles so I made a getaway Grin

silly cow. I would have laughed in her face. I HATE people who can't contain their raging inner child when there are actual children involved.

SummerRainIsADistantMemory · 19/02/2013 20:43

Oh wow.... What a loon!

The little boy sounds so sweet though, I'm glad the pushy mom didn't ruin it for him.

cuttingpicassostoenails · 19/02/2013 20:47

She was channeling her inner spoiled brat.

babiesinslingsgetcoveredinfood · 19/02/2013 20:48

Oh dear. There's always one.

"Another mum nearby then says to his Mum, 'He's not even feeding the penguins. My two want to feed them, get him out, he's wasting time.'"

Sounds like something one of the characters from Ab Fab would say.

hermioneweasley · 19/02/2013 20:51

Awesome. Can i Be the first to call her entitled?

LynetteScavo · 19/02/2013 20:57

I come across parents like this all there time. There are a whole bunch of them at swimming lessons.

TheVermiciousKnid · 19/02/2013 20:59

Lynette, it would be even more interesting if there were also penguins a the swimming lessons. And fish.

Will nobody think of the poor hungry penguins. :(

NopeStillNothing · 19/02/2013 21:03

My job involves picking children to help take part in shows etc.

You would not believe how many of these vile pricks exist. I actually perceive it as quite bullying behaviour ( especially when the other poor kid has no adult around 'fighting their corner') and I never pander to it.

LynetteScavo · 19/02/2013 21:03

You see, this tiny child was just teasing the poor penguin. Such selfish behaviour, and from such a young child. Wink

Or he could have been wanting to take the fish home to be his pet, which is when DS2 had in mind when he persuaded me to buy a trout from the fish counter in Sainsbury's.

missorinoco · 19/02/2013 21:06

He could have eaten the fish. That would really have been taunting them.

WheresTheCat · 19/02/2013 21:09

Grin Grin Oh missorinoco I wish he had!

We have a season ticket for Whipsnade and london Zoo and generally go at least once a week during the holidays. Going twice a week during summer increases your child's chance of getting picked. Especially when the zoo keeper recongises your children because they have been to the show three times that week. (and only got picked the third time!)

I think that the little lad sounds lovely. I hope that he and his family had a good day.

aquashiv · 19/02/2013 21:35

Penguin feeding envy I have heard it all.

Sulawesi · 19/02/2013 21:40

omg ReallyTired don't you get bored?? You must have the patience of a saint Smile.

notactuallyme · 19/02/2013 21:41

Otoh, its really irritating when your dcs want to do something and some numpty shoves their bewildered toddler on stage

LizzieVereker · 19/02/2013 21:48

notactuallyme, I think it's really mean of you to refer to Chico as a "bewildered toddler". Everyone knows he's lovely, like a Poundland Peter Andre. Shame on you. Wink

TheChaoGoesMu · 19/02/2013 21:53

I dont think I've ever come across parents like that before. Maybe I live a very sheltered life. Then again, my dc rarely get picked for anything like that, maybe I'm not forceful enough. I'm gonna start getting mean Grin

WhatsTheBuzz · 19/02/2013 21:55

sounds very cute. The wee lad, not the pushy lady.

CarpetBagger · 19/02/2013 21:56

When we go to local farm and they have feeding time for animals they do say loudly " no pushing, and I am talking to YOU PARENTS, your usually the worst offenders" then we all laugh and are nice and polite.

ReallyTired · 19/02/2013 22:46

"omg ReallyTired don't you get bored?? You must have the patience of a saint "

lol... Its better value than poxy children's farms! The advantage of a season ticket is that you don't feel you need to spend the whole day there because of the high entrance fee. I don't think I could tolerate a whole day of Whipsnade.

Whipsnade is a relatively cheap way to entertain children during the long break if you have a season ticket. We often go down to Whipsnade with friends for just a couple of hours. The children play in the park and the parents drink coffee (from a flask not bought) or read a book. I have to admit that my children more interested in the park and the train rather than the animals.

Recently Whipsnade opened a soft play area which is my idea of hell, but my daughter loves it.

Membership of Whipsnade/ London zoo costs £120 for one adult and up to five children. A family with one child needs to go about 3 times in a year to make it finanically worth while. Members also get a certain number of half price tickets, free parking and 10% off in the gift shop and resturant.

Sulawesi · 19/02/2013 22:54

Wow that is good value!

I see what you mean about just going for a couple of hours when you have a season ticket, makes perfect sense and it is a beautiful setting there.

MarinaTheMarvellous · 19/02/2013 22:58

Grin Lizzie - pound land Peter Andre is just perfect description!

VanitasVanitatum · 19/02/2013 23:06

Lynette - DS2's pet idea made me laugh out loud! Love that he actually got you to buy it..

LynetteScavo · 20/02/2013 08:27

VanitasVanitatum - I didn't realise he wanted it as a pet until we got home! I had every intention of cooking it.
