To be utterly pissed off at the price of the cinema and all it entails?

Took dd today. Bus fares into town and back£4.00, tickets £12.00 ( one adult one child in cheapest cinema, many more much much more expensive) booking fee £1.55 ( just the mention of booking fees sends me into meltdown).
Bottle of juice and small bag of seats purchased outside cinema, am never going to pay their prices) total about £ 21.00.

And yet! And yet! Massive queues of people forking out for nachos, hot dogs, popcorn etc etc. How do people afford this.!? Am totally mystified. By people I mean normal people who only go now and then to take kids, not ones who are members of clubs. If I had bought the crap in the cinema, total would have been nearer £30.00. To see a a 90 minute film. How much is that per minute? 60p a minute?

And as for 3d. Have never ever seen it, as refuse to pay for it, and never will!

I buy cinema food

I like the hotdogs and popcorn... don't want to sit eating nothing but sweets, and I'm buggered if I'm putting hotdogs and popcorn in my handbag to smuggle in.

We went today to cine world. 2 adults and 2 kids - 19 quid. Would not pay any more than that, no way. Refused to pay so much extra for 3d. And always refuse the snacks and drinks after doing it just once in the past and nearly fainting when they told me the total at the till.

Anyway, if you can't go 2 hrs without food or a drink then there's something medically wrong!!!

BookFairy · 18/02/2013 17:44

YANBU. I haven't been to the cinema in 4 years as the cost makes me too angry. My local cinema is a Vue - the prices would make your eyes water!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 18/02/2013 17:45

Don't get me started on the cost of 1 game at Hollywood bowl. Lasts 45 mins and u get harassed by bar staff coming to your lane whether you want a drink or not.

EnjoyResponsibly · 18/02/2013 17:45

Cinema tickets vs. theatre are v. reasonable.

2 tickets to see Shrek this weekend = £125 and that's including a discount DH gets through work.

You have to avoid the sweet and savouries counters like the plague.

As DD gets older ask for cinema vouchers for birthday gifts. They're truly marvellous!

carlajean · 18/02/2013 17:48

I don't know why people need to eat at the cinema at all. Ditto spending £1 on a bottle of water.

ILikeBirds · 18/02/2013 17:52

The Savoy in Nottingham (Derby Road) is now £4 with a student card ArielThePiraticalMermaid

I don't think that's too bad personally

GarbledMessage · 18/02/2013 17:53

You're lucky if you only get charged £1 for your water, as last time we got some it was £3....I mean £3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YANBU. which is why, unless it's something we really, really want to see, we buy the DVD when it comes out instead!

LayMizzRarb · 18/02/2013 17:55

I don't get the need for constant refreshment either. Maybe a bottle of water, but why the need to eat constantly through the film?

There are countries worse than us for cinema refreshments though. Try going to the cinema in Australia. The seats have pull down tray tables so you can rest your tray that is loaded with hotdogs, nachos, burgers, onion rings, ice cream sweets AND a drink. It is like watching a roomful of human sawmills. The audience just ramming things in their mouths for the whole film. . My Aus friends thought I was very strange just taking in a bottle of water.

OP, I'm guessing you're not in London. Try £20 each for adults. It is cheaper to buy the DVD and a Chinese takeaway.

derektheladyhamster · 18/02/2013 17:55

We only go to the kids club at cineworld. 90p each if you book online, and I take my own homemade popcorn Grin

KobayashiMaru · 18/02/2013 17:56

It's not about needing to eat at the cinema...you don't have popcorn and sweets because you need food, its about enjoying a treat with a film.
Jaysus talk about buzzkills....3d is too pricey, no-one needs to eat at the cinema....just don't go and stop the moaning!

DadOnIce · 18/02/2013 17:57

Do they "search your bags" to confiscate snacks or is that an urban myth? It's something you hear about, but I don't know anybody it's actually happened to.

DD and I didn't even have our bags searched when I took her to a concert at a big well-known arena venue. Still amazed at that.

LayMizzRarb · 18/02/2013 18:02

You can't really make a comparison between the price of theatre tickets and cinema prices. A staged musical will have about 200 staff on the books so the show will go on. Laundry mistresses, dressers, spotlight operators, security staff, stage door keepers, box office staff, cleaners, chaperones, electricians, carpenters etc etc etc Grin and I don't think you would like the heating bill for an average London Theatre!

Groovee · 18/02/2013 18:02

We saw wreck it ralph by our tesco vouchers. We bought 2 juices and it was £6. Last time we got a popcorn and juice combo that was about £9.

If we go to Cineworld we buy because they have refused people entry with their stashes of food. Never seen it happen at Vue and odeon which is next to home bargains has loads of people wandering in with food in home bargain bags.

MrsDimples · 18/02/2013 18:09

YANBU

DD wants to see Wreck It Ralph, I priced it up last week cheapest for for her, DH & I was £19 ish at Cineworld, Vue was more.

As yet she hasn't been to the cinema, hoping to keep it that way for as long as possible.

I am a sucker for Nacho's. When I was single I had a Cineworld card and watched several films a week at the cinema, I used to have to ration my Nacho intake Blush.

We have Sky Movies instead & I make my own popcorn / nachos.

imtheonlyone · 18/02/2013 18:14

I'm with you on this! We have four DSs and we took them to see a 3d film ..... Blissfully unaware the outing cost almost £100!!!!!! Needless to say, we haven't been since Shock

12ylnon · 18/02/2013 18:17

YANBU
We went to the cinema for a very special treat to see the Hobbit.
For two adults at odeon, one with a discount (can't remember how much, 25-50%) it cost us £22 for the tickets and 3d glasses alone Shock I couldn't believe i had to pay for the glasses as it wouldn't be possible to watch the film without them.
Luckily we sneaked our own food in.
I honestly didn't enjoy the night out because it just seemed like flushing money down the toilet.

InLoveWithDavidTennant · 18/02/2013 18:17

this is why i love my cineworld card. me and dh go once a week with friends, and then i go see all the crap things i want by myself the rest if the week. i only have to go twice a month for my card to benefit me so i really get my moneys worth out of it.

there was a month last year where i saw 7 films in one week and 3 of those were on the same day. it was fab Grin

i very rarely buy food/drink as i take my own. however... i now can get 25% off with my card so may buy something on special occasions.

i honestly dont know why all cinemas dont have membership cards. they would get more custom... and some of those people would buy food and drink too.

our cineworld also does other deals with some of the local businesses too. there's an all you can eat chinese right next door and you can get a discount if you show your card.

orangeandlemons · 18/02/2013 18:18

£100 < faints again>. I just cannot stop ranting about this. Dh has run away into the other room as I won't shut up

We saw Wreckitt Ralph. It was great!

OP posts:
KobayashiMaru · 18/02/2013 18:19

How could you possibly spend 100£? I can't believe you needed to spend that much.

orangeandlemons · 18/02/2013 18:20

Do you mean you have to pay for 3d glasses on top of the price of film? Surely not?

OP posts:
skaen · 18/02/2013 18:22

I have membership to our local independent cinema. 6 adult tickets included in membership, cheap kids club films, £1 for water or £3 for wine. All very nice and the same films as Vue.

sarahseashell · 18/02/2013 18:23

YANBU it's a rip-off

Remotecontrolduck · 18/02/2013 18:28

I paid £14 for one adult ticket to see a 2D film in London last week. I nearly spat out my coffee when I was told how much it was Shock
