to think the amount of litter dropped on our streets is disgusting

Some people even think its ok to clean the inside of their car out and then chuck the bag out by the side of the road. Is it just me but its seems to be getting worse ? Am I being a bit precious about this?

That's vile :( Its awful near me, I've actually complained to the council and they've done nothing about it, it's disgusting :(

Geekster · 18/02/2013 12:22

I think you are right it's getting worse. We recently moved house and its awful. There is also lots of broken glass and dog mess around. Where we used to live wasn't quite as bad, but someone obviously emptied the ashtray out of their car in the village hall car park, regularly it was covered in tab ends.

So no YANBU.

LadyBeagleEyes · 18/02/2013 12:23

Hat, hate, hate litter with a passion.

No, you're not being precious at all. I smoke and never throw my tabs in the street, I put them out and wait till I see a bin, or shove them in a carrier bag till I get home. Same with gum. There is no excuse for it.

cuteboots · 18/02/2013 12:26

Even in the country where my mum lives someone had dumped 2 bags of concrete and lots of hedge cuttings! Just makes me so angry . Its just seems that where ever you go its everywhere. And definitely more noticeable ; 0 (

No, not at all. I absolutely hate litter throwing. Put it in a bin. just ignorance and laziness IMO.

Hate it when people chuck it out of cars as well.

always been drummed into to me not to throw litter.

LookatMeeeeeee · 18/02/2013 12:27

YANBU. I live in Germany (where the streets are spotless).

When I come back to the UK for a visit, the filthy state of the streets shocks me every time!

FoxtrotFoxtrotSierra · 18/02/2013 12:28

I've taken to chasing people down the street with litter they've dropped and handing it back with a cheery "I think you dropped this" - so many people seemingly do it without thinking, and we need to make littering antisocial again.

FaceLikeAPickledOnion · 18/02/2013 12:30

I once heard that you are either part of the solution, or part of the problem.
If you don't like it instead of moaning, go and do something about it, grab a pair of marigolds and a bin bag and start litter picking. I have done this in the past and without asking other people, they saw what I was doing and came to help.

sydlexic · 18/02/2013 12:35

Littering is considered antisocial here, definitely not a problem.

cuteboots · 18/02/2013 12:36

Lookatmeeeee- You covered it for me . I lived in Minden for 5 years and what a difference.

Completely agree!

I hate litterbugs.

One of my best friends is a complete slob. Her and i took her neice and nephew and my dd to McDonalds and bowling last week.

As soon as they had finished eating (and left an almighty mess over the table, chairs and floor), they stood up to leave! Her nephew is ten and neice is three.

I sort of just stared in shock. My friend refused to clean it up. I asked the ten year old to at least put his own mess in the bin, which he reluctantly did.

I then took my time clearing the whole table and floor, much to friend's annoyance as it made us late for bowling.

I just don't understand why people do it?

Put it in your pocket/bag until you arrive at a bin. Or even hold it in your hand.

To be fair though, it would be better if bins were more appropriately placed.

My main street/shopping area has a bin within thirty feet of each other.

Other streets don't have a single one, and there's loads of litter on the pavements.

Mimishimi · 18/02/2013 12:50

It's definitely getting worse and I don't live in the UK. We just came back to Australia. My dad was completely shocked when he came to visit our city suburb and saw the amount of litter (granted, mostly junk mail) that people had just dumped on the ground. I don't remember any thing like it in the small mountains town where I grew up and he still lives. It was council cleanup two weekends ago and apart from the normal sort of thing (mattresses, old sofas etc), people had dumped the most disgusting rubbish in bags by the side of the road which had of course split and spilled everywhere.

Fakebook · 18/02/2013 12:54

I hate litter too. There was a time when there were a lot of ads on tv about keeping streets tidy (or did I imagine those?) and I'm sure the roads used to be cleaner.

On Saturday, in our local park, I had to stop DS (13 m) from picking up bottle tops and crushed cans and putting them in his mouth. They were all around the zip rope ride. I did pick them up and throw them in the bin myself.

Sparklingbrook · 18/02/2013 12:56

What always makes me Angry is driving off the motorway, down the slip road and there are plastic bottles of wee all over the verges.

ZebraOwl · 18/02/2013 13:14

YANBU - it's foul!

I can't believe the number of people who just drop wrappers etc in the street/leave rubbish on trains/generally make a massive mess & leave it for someone else to clean up.

Some London councils have finally started doing bins with a recycling section as well as one for General Rubbish so I don't have to take plastic bottles etc home with me to recycle. We need more of these: better positioned; emptied more frequently to prevent the only to common overflow problem; & harsh penalties for being caught dropping letter.

It doesn't help that some public places - like stations, fr'example - don't have bins as an anti-terrorism measure. I understand the logic, but it means lots of people leave their rubbish rather than taking it with them or finding the person trotting about with the bincart. Ech.

ScarletLady02 · 18/02/2013 13:44

YANBU I hate litter. We have a lovely park here and it's always covered with rubbish, despite there being bins everywhere and the park rangers even go up to groups of youths who are drinking etc and give them bin bags.

lashingsofbingeinghere · 18/02/2013 13:47

Time for a huge Tidy Britain school campaign, methinks. If you get children young enough, not littering becomes an instinct, like looking before you cross the road. Not sure what you do about parents/adults who litter. Fines hardly seem to touch the problem.
So depressing.

I can't stand it! I've started taking a litter picker and bin bag out with me when I take the dog for a walk, I figure it makes at least a small difference.

I agree it has got worse. It also seems to be takeways and cans of drink. Even had a pizza box thrown in our front garden the other day. And driving around I think there are a number of people who just fling things out of a car whilst driving.

They are complete slobs. Imagine what their houses are like....

HoHoHoNoYouDont · 18/02/2013 14:43

Remember the 'keep Britain tidy' campaign? That appears to have died a death doesn't it!

I'm so angry when I see people emptying their cars onto the streets. A few months ago I was parked up in the McDonalds car park having a sneaky snack and the car next to me dumped their litter out of the window. There was a bloody bin not 6ft away. I was Angry

andubelievedthat · 18/02/2013 18:02

nope , you are right to be angry , suggest you start wearing purple clothes and running your walking stick along railings ! i asked the cleaning dept rep for the area in which i live why they do not clean/empty the overflowing bins in small beautiful park adjacent to where i live ? he told me "ah, thats building and works job to do , we cannot clean there!">>so i cleaned it ,once< i started wearing purple ages ago !
