Too much to drink for driving?

IceBergJam · 15/02/2013 17:58

Is drinking 9 - 10 drinks, finishing at 0100 and driving at 0830 too much or not?

Which drinks?

You'd be fine with milk Wink

Littleturkish · 15/02/2013 17:59

Yes.

I was going to say- what drinks- but the timings alone, I would say you would still be drunk at 830 and would test positive if stopped.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2013 17:59

Yes-too much.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2013 18:00

Is this something that has happened or about to happen?

middleagedspread · 15/02/2013 18:01

Isn't it an hour per unit? So finishing at 1am would mean not driving until 11am. That's based on single measures/small glass of wine.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2013 18:02

But there are a lot of variables that have to be taken into account.

lurkedtoolong · 15/02/2013 18:03

When did the drinking start? But yes, always always always err on the side of caution

NobbyClark · 15/02/2013 18:04

Yes, as middle said, one unit takes one hour to leave your system so it really depends on whether you were drinking pints, large glasses of wine, spirits etc.
but basing it on the smallest drink possible, eg 1 shot or v small glass of wine, 11 am should be the earliest to drive.
If you started drinking at say 5pm, then some of what you drink will have already left your system but still I wouldn't risk it.

Signet2012 · 15/02/2013 18:04

There was an experiment on tv once about this, I think the person had a regular consumption for a night out and wasn't fully clear to drive until the next afternoon.

IceBergJam · 15/02/2013 18:06

Started about 2000. Shots and beer.

Was wondering whether I over reacted at my stepson.

CointreauVersial · 15/02/2013 18:10

Good risk you'd be over the limit.

I bet your stepson can't count, either.

Pandemoniaa · 15/02/2013 18:11

I hate to sound judgemental but the only safe level to drive with is zero.

Anyone wanting to drink shots and beer needs to make alternative travel arrangements.

Iteotwawki · 15/02/2013 18:14

Basic calculation is one hour per unit plus an hour - so drinking 10 units (assuming 10 drinks is 10 units - it may be more) and finishing at 1am would leave you unfit to drive until 12midday the next day.

If it was 10 beers - which may be 20 units - you'd be over the limit for most of the next day.

lougle · 15/02/2013 18:16

9-10 units (at least) between 8pm and 1 am.

35 ml spirit shot is a 1.5 hour drink.
1 pint of beer (4%) is a 2.5 hour drink. 3 hours for 5% beer.
So 5 shots and 5 pints, would be 20 hours to clear.

TwllBach · 15/02/2013 18:16

This.

lougle · 15/02/2013 18:21

according to the bac website, a 20 year old male weighing 10 stones would still have a blood alcohol of 0.14% at that time, when legal limit is 0.8%.

DameMargotFountain · 15/02/2013 18:26

i'm on the zero tolerance team too

hope your SDS took on board everything you said, OP

i like that way you've shown the calculation there, Iteotwawki

it takes an hour for your body to dispose/digest 1 unit, and needs a clear hour to after drinking to start getting rid of a 'session'

Writehand · 15/02/2013 18:27

Yes, it's way too much. On average it takes the body about 1 hour to deal with 1 unit of alcohol, so 9 or 10 drinks would definitely not have left you fit to drive after 7.5 hours. And of course, when you say "drink" if you mean a drink as in a pint of lager or a glass of wine rather than a single unit of alcohol the number of units per drink depends on the strength of the drink. A small glass of wine is about 1.5 units, and a pint of Guiness or Fosters is 2.3. So 9 or 10 drinks could easily add up to 15 units.

If you're interested, there's a blood alcohol calculator online, though they stress you shouldn't rely on it for legal purposes. And there's an article Can I drive the morning after drinking alcohol? on the Drink Aware site.

QuickLookBusy · 15/02/2013 18:27

Lots of people get caught drink driving the morning after a night out.

The police are very aware of the fact that some idiots people think they'll get away with it.

Yfronts · 15/02/2013 18:42

one unit per hour rest.

GrowSomeCress · 15/02/2013 18:47

Do not drive

Remotecontrolduck · 15/02/2013 18:50

It is too much, way too much. Absolutely not.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2013 18:52

It's way too much whether driving or not. Sad

carabos · 15/02/2013 18:53

12 hours from bottle to throttle is a good rule of thumb.
