To think that Martine McCutcheon should have been more careful with all that money she earned?

Is it so hard to keep a third of your earnings for tax and not live beyond your means? Why did bankruptcy happen?

She's a very talented lady I think but never really capitalised on her big breaks, though her last big job, for Activa, must have earned her a tidy sum.

Still, I was an extra on a TV job she did years ago, post-Enders. Seemed nice enough and really gorgeous with no make-up.

feminine Of course it doesn't really matter, but then you could say the same about half the threads here. Why so defensive?

I think it matters to all tax payers in the UK when someone fails to pull their weight and pay their bills.

CSIJanner · 15/02/2013 21:29

Especially if the day after being declared bankrupt, the Daily Mail reports that they post a picture on twitter of their new £550+ extensions....

Southeastdweller · 15/02/2013 21:29

Never thought about it like that before binfull

Yes, I thought posting a photo of your new expensive hair extensions the day after bankruptcy was crass.

I also thought her comments that it was "to cheer herself up" suggested she has learnt nothing and is still putting the desire for luxury before responsibility and duty.

FlouncingMintyy · 15/02/2013 22:05

Re. the hair extensions: isn't it obvious that they were a freebie in return for Tweets about the salon that did them?

YouOldSlag · 15/02/2013 22:05

The article said she had a discount for the mention.

TheCraicDealer · 15/02/2013 22:22

Thought the extensions were probably a freebie as well, she's hardly going to admit that like.

I don't know much about her, but don't think that Kerry Katona is a fair representation of what a typical bankrupt individual lives like. She's constantly doing ridiculous interviews with insights on what she thinks about her ex remarrying, her ex-best mate carrying on, weight loss, etc. Every one of those probably nets her a few thousand quid, which immediately goes on rent for the big house and all her other outgoings. She might have an alright lifestyle but I bet she doesn't have much of a buffer for when the media eventually looses interest.

Tryharder · 15/02/2013 22:33

I have no sympathy with her at all and agree with others that bankruptcy is just a legal way for her not to have to pay her debts and tax bill.

I cannot stand her.

amandine07 · 16/02/2013 00:03

I remember being at the hairdressers last year and idly flicking through Hello magazine, looking at the spread of her fabulous looking wedding to Jack McManus (definitely not the son of JP McManus!) which took place in Italy, Lake Como I think.

I remember mentally trying to work out how much the wedding probably cost...£50k? Now that she's been declared bankrupt it sort of puts the huge wedding in a whole new perspective...I'm wondering if the cost of that has been written off too? Assuming it wasn't all paid for up front...

Bankruptcy is certainly NOT an 'easy option' and anyone who would think that has quite a loose grip on reality IMO. How the fuck would some crummy tabloid know what she spends her money on? I think it's unlikely that she's finding being publicly humiliated very easy either.

verytellytubby · 16/02/2013 09:15

My DH worked on one of her adverts. Said she was vile and rude. She turned up 4 hours late to the shoot leaving the crew waiting. Real diva.

PuffPants · 16/02/2013 09:30

I'm shocked to read sympathy for her actually. Her biggest debt is to the taxman. That means she's pocketed every penny she's earned and not paid a penny in tax to support the economy of this country. It's reprehensible and does not deserve a moment of anyone's sympathy.

I don't understand why she didn't have to sell her assets to cover the debt.

LaLaGabby · 16/02/2013 09:50

Bankruptcy is not the modern way to get out of your debts without paying the bill.

Bankruptcy is an ancient legal principle which is almost as old as the notions of debt and money.

The idea behind bankruptcy is that it prevents reckless and exploitative lending. Lenders quite rightly bear a responsibilty if they lend to people who have no way of paying back.

Bankrupts do not get off scot free. In general they lose everything they have apart from the basic things they need to live and do their jobs. They also will find it very difficult to get any kind of credit again.

Southeastdweller · 16/02/2013 10:10

Posting up Twitter pics of expensive new hair extensions a day after it's reported she's gone bankrupt is almost funny - does she think that industry folk are going to be impressed and going to offer her work?! Maybe she doesn't care.

I still think she's a talented lady, but I don't think she's that bright.

bellejar · 16/02/2013 10:11

Totally agree about the hair extensions, free or otherwise. It shows her up as a vacuous little image-obsessed no-brain which is how she got herself into this mess in the first place.

PuffPants · 16/02/2013 11:07

LaLaGabby, how come she hasn't had to sell her home to pay the debt?

LaLaGabby · 16/02/2013 12:15

Because she lives in it Puffpants, and therefore it falls under the basic things she needs to live.

LaLaGabby · 16/02/2013 12:21

Correction, her home can be sold to pay the debt. She will probably go on living in it until it is decided whether she needs to sell it or not.

If she gets to keep it it probably means that she has enough other assets to pay off her creditors.
