To think Sky tv are been really sneaky and underhand.

I got a phone call out the blue yesterday as dishing up tea.

Someone called John from Sky to talk to me about my account. He said as I hadn't needed any repairs done in the past 12 months I could have a discount on my account. He asked me to confirm I hadn't called any repair people out which I confirmed.

So he said they could knock 25% off my bill which would take it to £6 a month and he'd "set that up for me now".

I clicked that no way would sky be £6 a month and that this was a scam insurance type extra product. But at no time did he say that, he didn't only not make it clear but I feel he went out of his way to try and mislead me into thinking he was talking about my normal sky bill.

Someone who's elderly or not very quick thinking could easily be taken in by this. Makes me cross. Is it worth complaining to Sky?

I doubt it was Sky who rang - we have had a succession of insurance companies ringing - some actually say they are from Sky, or Sky sure, or Sky something or other.....

We always say if it breaks we will go with virgin... now they have started saying if you do switch there will be a big charge for installation (errr... no...) so we should sign up for our cheap insurance instead....

scaevola · 13/02/2013 19:47

It's probably worth ringing them. Bu be prepared for the possibility that this is nothing whatsoever to do with them. I hope you did not confirm any personal details to this cold caller.

ratspeaker · 13/02/2013 19:48

Theres lots of hits on the web if you google Sky repair and scam

ReluctantMother · 13/02/2013 19:50

Anything like that where I am not sure I just tell them to put it in writing.

VivaLeBeaver · 13/02/2013 19:50

I did wonder afterwards if it was actually Sky or not. I didn't confirm any details. I'm with TPS as well so it's bad that they've got my number.....probably from .sky.

ByTheWay, I said the same to Dh - if it breaks and Sky won't fix it we'll just go back to Virgin. virgin happily repair their boxes free of charge, or did for me anyway.

Actually it can't have been Sky as he asked if I had the hd box or the ordinary one. Sky would have know that wouldn't they.

This is a common scam.

It's not hard to pick up on active Sky dishes, and then buy the numbers for properties in that area. Like you said, some people just pay it.

Sky were trying to take them to court earlier this year but I'm not sure how far they got. We got a letter from Sky advising us that it was nothing to do with them, and I'm sure it's been on Watchdog.

Terrible practise.

freddiefrog · 13/02/2013 19:55

Yes, we've had one of those calls, but we've only been back with Sky for 2 months after 18 months with BT Vision so they back tracked and finished the call when I pointed out that we hadn't been with them as long as he was claiming we had

I googled the number (an 0800 number?) and it said it was D&G on behalf of Sky.

Unfortunately my mil fell for this Sad. She was taken in by the Scottish accent (where Sky is based) and the fact that they knew her name etc.

After the phone call she pondered for a while and then rang dh to tell him what she had done. She had confirmed all her details and gave out her Bankcard number.

The payment couldn't be stopped but dh cancelled her card. She has to wait for paperwork to come through before she can obtain a refund by way if the 7 day cancellation period.
