just watching th wright stuff and they are talking about banning pack lunches as school dinners are healthier while people put nothing but crisps, fizzy drinks and crap in pack lunches.

i have two children, one loves school dinners but other is fussy. tried making him go to school dinners as thought it would make him less fussy. school called to say that some days he was eating nothng but pudding. his pack lunch is a wholemeal butter sandwich, pot of cucumber and peppers, fruit and a biscuit.

one woman phoned in to say she worked in a school supervising lunches and had never seen carrots or such, really? i wish fussy eater would eat school dinners but not convinced his pack lunch isn't better for him.

No way would DS eat that at school, I wouldn't eat it in my own lunch.

I smiled at this. Do you think there is a link?

TheMightyLois · 14/02/2013 16:16

That's a bit snarky MrsTP. We eat plenty of fruit and veg, but I bloody hate uncooked veg.

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/02/2013 16:56

I know it sounded snarky. It wasn't meant to. Thanks

TheMightyLois · 14/02/2013 17:08

Heh,fair enough.

Tbh I think the main issue of packed lunch's is portion control. It never ceases to amaze me the amount of food children are being given, totally ott amounts.

Belinda did you really come onto this thread to correct grammar? Get a grip and [odfod]!

WRT to the packed lunches not being banned after all, good, what a stupid idea, taking away the parents choice in what their children eat? Baffling!

I don't think they'll ban them otherwise they really would have to up their game on the school dinners front. Some people probably do send their children in with crap to eat but unfortunately that's their choice as the parent (and might not be reflective of waht else the child gets that day). At what point is the cut-off that schools have to make up for every poor parenting choice, can't it just get back to being an education provider. It probably sounds harsh (and it's awful if kids don't get fed properly) but I just think the schools cannot be there to rectify everything-they have enough on.

Ha, was going to say my faux pas of 'pack lunch' was an autocorrect error or such but seems I have banged on about 'pack lunches' o'er and o'er! There, even an old dog can learn a new trick - wanders off muttering 'PACKED lunch, PACKED lunch...'

And yes I truly believe my child's PACKED lunch is better for him nutritionally than the school dinner. I know he would leave any vegetables unless it was cucumber and scoff down the pudding and ask for another. I have been surprised at what other kids have in the packed lunches but that is their business and only a snap shot of their daily diet.

Alot of schools will remove chocolate and crisps from packed lunches which I think is disgusting - it might not be healthy but it's better than the kids going hungry and schools shouldn't be their to police what parents choose to feed their children - they shouldn't have the right to take food from a child especially when they remove chocolate but then serve chocolate cake themselves. I try and pack what I know my kids will eat - we try and be as healthy as we can but I'd rather they ate something than nothing and too many kids will just chuck stuff out they don't like which is wasting food and money - when I have paid for school dinners my child always comes home hungry because they didn't like what was on offer - it's hard to keep up with the menus some weeks unless you have them every day - one school really made me mad by providing soup and a bread roll - so I was paying £2 for a bread roll because dd3 doesn't like soup and she didn;t even get given an extra bread roll - the supervising staff don't care if a child doesn't eat the meal. To talk about banning packed lunches if just an incredibly selfish way of raising money rather than actually caring about the individual child. I did like the comment from one headmaster though who said he had bigger battles to fight at his school tha what kids bring in their lunch boxes.

SquinkiesRule · 14/02/2013 18:08

I've never sent Crisps or biscuits my kids lunch so they are way off.
I too hate uncooked veg, but Dd will eat baby carrots, cucumbers and Olives in her pack lunch.
Today she's taken a slice of whole wheat bread with cheese and cucumber on it. Sliced cucumber, Fat free milk in a carton, sugar free jelly (no artificial sweeteners in, just fruit juice) Crunchy peanut butter granola and a tangerine.

TheMightyLois · 14/02/2013 18:15

DS just has half a sandwich, an apple and a yoghurt. If I've made some biscuits or buns I might shove one of those in too. He seems happy enough with that. Not idea what the other kids get though.

Where are all these schools who give chips and junk every day?

All the schools here have the same supplier and they have a huge variety of food on a three weekly rota. They do have fish and chips on a friday with an option if a healthier meal or a jacket potato with beans.

Other meals include home made vegetable or chicken pizza with salad in the summer or corn on the cob in winter. Cottage pie with vegetables etc all made on site.

Its £1.90 a day which I felt was good value. I let my 2 dc of school age choose if they want packed lunch or hot school dinners each week.

Packed lunches are harder in this house as mine are more likely to want a sandwich with ham and butter etc and then leave half of it. Whereas they seem to enjoy school dinners.

you cant ban packed lunches. for those with mulitple allergies a packed lunch is the safest option.
