My nose has been broken 4 times and hurts like hell in the winter which I suspect will get worse as I get older. I need glasses but can't wear them for longer than a couple of hours as they're very uncomfortable on the big bump on my nose and my eyes are too dry for contacts. It looks pretty horrid from the side but am more concerned about getting it done for practical reasons. I can afford to do it but partly feel I'm B U to choose to go into non-essential surgery when I have kids as obviously there are always risks. AIBU if I go for it?

Nope, it seems to make perfect sense, if you are feeling uncomfortable with your glasses on and are suffering pain in winter... Go for it!

hippoCritt · 11/02/2013 22:05

I'd check if more surgery would increase the pain, everything we do carries risk, going up/down stairs etc, will it make a difference to how you feel?

YANBU but be very selective choosing a surgeon

pointythings · 11/02/2013 22:14

I'd definitely investigate, find out about the pros and cons from reputable people, but really - this is about your quality of life, and if you get answers that give you confidence, I'd just go for it.

I wouldn't call it a nose job either, that has cosmetic overtones and your problems are definitely not cosmetic.

Certainly what Pointythings said... in which case be even more careful in choosing your surgeon. Good luck.

Just because it's non-essential doesn't mean it can't be life changing and well worth doing if you have the opportunity.

I had a nose job... Changed my life. So so much happier. However, I went to Paris to get it, and this is a big regret. Subsequently I got septecemia (long story but directly related to flying home the next day) so I would recommend getting it done in the UK.

Asides from this, it really has transformed my life, it didn't hurt at all (apart from the packing getting taken out!) and I definitely don't regret it.

go for it
if it's non cosmetic you may be able to get it done on the NHS

Flojobunny · 11/02/2013 22:33

What Eldon said and also if its cosmetic you might still be able to get it on the NHS, they do cosmetic surgery too. Especially if its been broken 4 times. I'm surprised they didn't offer it you just after it was broken.
