Having a conversation today with friends and they were discussing what they would be wearing for a weekend away in Paris.

When my friend said "I don't own anything fashionable apart from my UGGs"

My face was a little --> Confused

Now I own a pair of UGG's and not for one second do I think they are fashionable. I wear them because they are comfy and really cosy.

That's why my mum wears hers.

FanFuckingTastic · 11/02/2013 20:18

I think young people wear them (mostly cheap fakes round here) because they are meant to be fashionable?

I wear my sheepskin boots because I have Reynauds Syndrome and they are the only things that keep my feet warm. A really nice lady helped me to be able to afford them and they have been a life saver this year, at one point I was crippled with chilblains on my feet so painful I couldn't get shoes on, then I got the boots (and medication), my toes are actually looking good.

They are very fashionable. You might think they are ugly & unflattering, but they are still very in fashion.

Anyone remember when Grunge was in fashion?!

NotGeoffVader · 11/02/2013 20:19

I'm not a fan of them - they look like indoor footwear to me. But I can understand people wearing them for warmth.

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS · 11/02/2013 20:20

They are neither fashionable or unfashionable, they are functional.

PuppyMonkey · 11/02/2013 20:20

What you think people pay £170 a pair just because they're comfy and warm? Hmm

NotYouNaanBread · 11/02/2013 20:21

Well, they're not, but some people think they are and no harm done. I REALLY wish people wouldn't wear them out in the wet though, or worse, the SNOW.

CaliforniaButterfly · 11/02/2013 20:21

Yes property I agree.

Theres a saying fashion over function - so I'm unsure where Ugg's would fit into that.

I would probably have called them fashionable when they first came out, but now with cheap copies around and practically everyone owning a pair I'm not so sure ....

Yes why not Puppy ? I did.

You paid £170 because they are fashionable. Not because they are practical or functional.

SashaSashays · 11/02/2013 20:27

They are very fashionable, when we look back in say 30 years, I think they will be the shell suits of today.

However they are not high fashion, chic, filling the pages of Vogue etc.

They are a mass market saturation not a 'trend'.

TomArchersSausage · 11/02/2013 20:28

I've never owned any but have always wondered - don't they get soggy? They don't look very hardwearing and I notice people seem to tread the heels down.

bedmonster · 11/02/2013 20:30

Well they are fashionable in that they are very popular and lots of people have them or imitations, but imo they look hideous! Not everyones opinion obviously, they are everywhere, but YANBU to think they don't look very nice if you feel that way.
I tried on some of my friends ones a while back as we were going out for a walk and she told me they were really comfy, but even though they were really warm I found them really sort of flat and my feet just slid around in them.
But your friend is probably used to them and can walk far in them comfortably which is useful if she's going on a city break.

FanFuckingTastic · 11/02/2013 20:31

I wear mine out wet or snowy. Warm feet are most important. I didn't by the brand name Ugg though, I bought the sheepskin boot (from a seconds shop and in a sale) which people all call Ugg boots for some reason. They are very much functional for me, don't need to bend to put them on, no laces or zips or buttons, and warm enough to stop the Reynauds. The perfect shoe.

BambieO · 11/02/2013 20:32

I agree with puppy if you wanted just warmth there are plenty or alternatives, some which are warmer (I once ha a pair from m and s which beat my Uggs for warmth hands down). You pay for the label.

For the record I do have uggs and I got them because they were fashionable AND warm and cosy. I could have gotten a pair half the price but I wanted the real deal as such.

piprabbit · 11/02/2013 20:35

I don't imagine that Parisians will be very impressed with Uggs.

But she will be warm and comfy.

Beaverfeaver · 11/02/2013 20:53

I haven't seen anyone wearing uggs for at least 8 months

Footface · 11/02/2013 20:55

They were very fashionable about 6 years ago

ifancyashandy · 11/02/2013 21:24

They are not fashionable. I have a few pairs and no longer wear them out of the house - apart from my leather ones. They are über expensive slippers!

Morloth · 11/02/2013 21:29

LOL as someone raised in the western suburbs of Sydney, I can't help a little snurk to myself when I see people wearing UGGS as 'fashionable'.

PMSL.

Mum is horrified that I even have a pair for wearing in public. UGGS are slippers, for putting the bins out and maybe at a stretch for getting bread/milk in the morning.

I have a hot pink pair that I wear in the winter and every time I put them on I feel a bit embarrassed, but I figured hey if you are going to be a bogan you might as well go the whole way and announce it. Grin

Excellent PR work from UGG though, am very impressed at what a change they have achieved in how their product is viewed!

andubelievedthat · 11/02/2013 21:42

deffo fashionable , no possibility of them ever being stylish thou.
