I don't eat meat anyway but yanbu. We have no idea what is in any of these products. And I don't know if we can be certain that veggie processed food is ok either. Stick to cooking from scratch if you ask me!

gordyslovesheep · 11/02/2013 18:53

yabu just buy decent meat locally - its the vile processed shite thats the issue

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/02/2013 18:53

Cook from scratch and buy local. I wouldn't trust meat free pies either, bleugh.

calandarbear · 11/02/2013 18:54

I always cook from scratch so I'm not changing my habits but I'm quite sure if I did buy ready meals and processed foods I would stop in the light of this scandal.

Or romanian horses, regardless of drugs etc, as I can't imagine their abattoirs have very high welfare standards Sad.

I couldn't bring myself to buy anything but bacon this week, and made sure it was british (I always do anyway). Surely they can't substitute that with something else? I was in Aldi earlier buying bananas and noticed the freezers with the mince etc in were full up to the top so you are not alone OP.

Bluestocking · 11/02/2013 18:56

YANBU. Buy meat from your local butcher - choose one that can confidently tell you where the meat comes from. Yes, it'll be expensive, but why should meat be cheap? And what makes you think non-red meat is somehow more reliable than red?

CremeEggThief · 11/02/2013 18:57

Jinsei, have to admit I have started wondering about my frozen veggie soya burgers... Hmm

RevoltingPeasant · 11/02/2013 18:57

Surely it's also that British retailers are sending meat from Ireland over to the continent? So it's not that the EU are out to get us, but we are contaminating others?

Anyhow wouldn't really want to bet that everything labelled 'chicken' is actually.... ick.

I don't eat meat but if you are that bothered, why not go to a local farm shop and buy identifiable cuts? Obvs more expensive so buy a few every month and eat meat 1-2 times a week, but know what you're getting.

SoldeInvierno · 11/02/2013 18:59

I don't eat meat, but if I did, I think I would be cutting down to eating it occasionally but only buying the best cuts directly from a butcher. Better little and good quality.

RedToothBrush · 11/02/2013 19:00

Why just red meat?

I would image theres a similar problem with white meat too...

babiesinslingsgetcoveredinfood · 11/02/2013 19:02

YABU buy meat not processed meat. Buy British. Just eat less of it. Better for you & will cost same if you chuck in a couple of meat free days.

RevoltingPeasant · 11/02/2013 19:04

This is probably totally sensationalistic and tasteless, but what the hell.

A comment on The Guardian website recently pointed out that they think now all this is driven by mafiosi types, or gangs at least. It also pointed out that you only find the stuff you are testing for, in this case equine DNA.

So, the question was... is anyone testing processed meat for human DNA?

TheFallenNinja · 11/02/2013 19:11

Cool - Soylent Green.

Bunfags · 11/02/2013 19:11

YANBU. I was eating meat free stuff, but after this business with the horses, I don't trust that either. I'd feel more confident buying from my local butcher.

Rugbycomet · 11/02/2013 19:16

What do you mean.......comes from the EU??? We are in the Eu!! And all the countries mentioned are in the Eu!!?

seaofyou · 11/02/2013 19:18

How do I know the meat at the butchers is safe? (is their a label to say UK standards and UK bred?).

Never ever bought processed meat...just normal pork chops/steak/stewing beef can't even go down the aisle eek!

On brink of turning veggie from all this!

YABU, the red tractor logo is for British meat, which has not been affected, it's the shit foreign meat that they bought in crap ready meals that is the source of the scandal.

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/02/2013 19:20

My local butcher has pictures of the pigs they use at the farm. It is four times the price of supermarket meat but we don't eat that much meat so [shrug]. Ask your butcher where they source their meat from. You won't be the first one to ask this week!

seaofyou · 11/02/2013 19:23

Red Tractor logo thanks MonkeySea never looked for of noticed a logo before as never thought about it uuugh!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/02/2013 19:26

we buy ours from our local farm shop. As they have the animals all there (and slaughter them locally) I feel its ok.
However, when eating out and about I shall think very carefully about what I eat! Have asked dd to eat veggie when she eats school meals, until this is all sorted.

RevoltingPeasant · 11/02/2013 19:27

Sorry meant the continent Blush

seaofyou · 11/02/2013 19:28

Thanks MrsTP will ask (but not trust anymore my confidence is quashed thanks flaming Tescos!!).
