to not give DS any medicine

He's off a school today with a cough. He's in bed.

He's not in pain or upset but feeling a bit sorry for himself. He has a slightly raised temperature but not much.

I haven't given him any medicine today.

I know if I do he'll feel immediately better and be leaping off the furniture. At least this way he is resting and can recover.

But I feel a bit mean.

I would give him some medicine if it makes him feel better.

Wouldn't you take some to help you feel better?

aldiwhore · 11/02/2013 15:10

Paracetamol won't cure his cough, it will make him feel better though.

YABU.

And mean.

I completely feel your pain.

Theicingontop · 11/02/2013 15:11

By medicine do you mean paracetamol or antibiotics?

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 11/02/2013 15:12

That is really U.

You would honestly rather have him feeling crap so you don't have to run after him?

That is pretty appalling.

Sugarice · 11/02/2013 15:12

If he's got even a slightly raised temp I'd give him some medicine to make him feel more comfortable.

batmanstinks · 11/02/2013 15:13

If he was in pain, obviously I would.

I suppose I liken it to taking Lemsip max then going to work. Actually you'd be much better off not taking it and going to bed.

He needs to rest and I know if he feels better he won't.

OP posts:
batmanstinks · 11/02/2013 15:14

I mean calpol.

He has quite a strong reaction to it which makes him a bit hyper.

OP posts:
usualsuspect · 11/02/2013 15:15

I would still take lemsip max or whatever if I went to bed.

chocoluvva · 11/02/2013 15:15

If by 'medicine' you mean Calpol, YANBU.

It won't help him get better. The temperature is his body's way of killing off the virus. I think you're being very sensible.

batmanstinks · 11/02/2013 15:15

And it's absolutely not so I don't run around after him.

I'm doing a lot of running after him.

Theicingontop · 11/02/2013 15:15

If he's not in pain, just feels a bit crappy with a temperature, yadnbu. People are far too keen to dish out paracetamol for no reason.

chocoluvva · 11/02/2013 15:16

He's better with hot lemon and honey.

MousyMouse · 11/02/2013 15:22

if he is really not in pain yanbu. fever is part of the body's defence system.
I probably would give something before bedtime to help with a good sleep though.

MousyMouse · 11/02/2013 15:24

and I woukd rather give ibuprofen than paracetamol, as it doesn't make my dc hyper.

MortifiedAdams · 11/02/2013 15:24

If medicine would have made him feel well, why didnt you give him a dose this.morning and take him.into school? Ask the teacher if you can pop up at lunch to give another dose.

batmanstinks · 11/02/2013 15:28

Because he's ill!

And so that he doesn't cough over the rest of the class and make them ill too!

OP posts:
tinygreendragon · 11/02/2013 15:32

I'm with Theicingontop Sometimes a bit of rest is just as good as the medicine to make one feel better. Medicine shouldn't be the first go-to when anyone feels slightly unwell.

MortifiedAdams · 11/02/2013 15:34

Hmmm....sorry but I really wouldnt keep them off (or stay off work myself) with a cough.

ChristmasJubilee · 11/02/2013 15:36

I wouldn't hesitate to give mine ibuprofen (paracetamol doesn't agree with him) to make him feel better. He will get better whether he's in bed feeling awful or in the living room playing with his toys!

Imnotaslimjim · 11/02/2013 15:36

I was actually advised by a dr not to give calpol for a fever. Same as theicingontop and mousymouse said, the fever is the bodies defence to infection and you get better quicker without it. You're his mum, do whatever you think is best

Meglet · 11/02/2013 15:40

yanbu. If he's able to eat and drink a little and rest all day then he'll probably recover faster than taking medicine. As long as he's not suffering then let him be.

Sirzy · 11/02/2013 15:44

If he just has a cough your nicer than me letting him stay at home (assuming no asthma or possible infection)

topbannana · 11/02/2013 15:53

YADNBU
DS has a bottle of Calpol every couple of years which we eventually throw away as it goes out of date or the lid sticks and we cannot open it :o
If he was in PAIN then of course he would be given it. Like the OP's DS though, one dose brings about a miraculous recovery and will have him demanding to play outside, go on his bike etc. If he is ill then he needs to be resting and quiet, a dose of Calpol will prevent this as he will be immediately "better" until the dose wears off.

batmanstinks · 11/02/2013 15:56

Thank you topbannana. I was beginning to feel very guilty Smile

I actually think it's more wicked to dose them up and send them to school.

seeker · 11/02/2013 15:59

If he's only a got a bit of a cough why on earth is he in bed?
