But why do so many people start a juicy interesting thread and then just leave abruptly, if you go to all the trouble of started a thread, presumably about a subject you care about or are worried about then it is just bad manners to drift off and not update everyone, even if you just come back to say 'nothing to update'. .

Placemarking s a bit pointless, anyhow. You can boomark your place (need to turn this option on - on the same page your choose your colours etc) and, if you haven't posted in it, watch it. That's all you need to do. If it's grown, click on the thread title and the page will scroll to where you bookmarked it.

Very good point, Mardy. I've given up on the same thread for this very reason.

FFS, it's not necessary to make a threadkilling challenge out of someone's dilemma, and it's not as though the problem was desperately upsettuing for the OP, meaning she needed a MN cheerleading squad to give her the emotional oomph to tell someone to "FOTTFSOF" or say "NIACS" . MN does that extremely well, and it would be a shame to inhibit that urge.
