To try the MN haircut?

...you know, the one where you put your hair into a ponytail and cut it yourself?

I really don't like going to the hairdressers. It's just not a thing I enjoy. I like doing nails and everything else, and taking care of myself. But the hairdresser is a real chore.

Has anyone done it? AIBU to try, or should I just get back in my box and crack on with the hairdressers?

Well I've done it a few times and it's great. Curly hair and with lovely layers round face now.

MrsLettuce · 10/02/2013 17:50

Second time I did mine snobby, interfering MIL (who has excellent taste) wanted to know why I'd been wasting money on such a fab cut while we were skint...

slatternlymother · 10/02/2013 17:51

I'm seriously considering it...

what's the adapted cut?

tinygreendragon · 10/02/2013 17:54

I've cut my hair like this for about 10 years, didn't realise it was the 'MN Haircut'.

If you're not bothered if it doesn't come out perfect and are prepared to realise that its only a haircut and it does grow back, then do it. Smile

MammaTJ · 10/02/2013 17:59

Do it, I did and the result is on my profile. I have long, wavy hair. I am happy with my MN haircut and it is much better than the trauma of having someone else put their hands on my head for an interminable length of time.

BubblegumPie · 10/02/2013 18:05

how long do you leave after the bobble to get a nice longish fringe?

Trills · 10/02/2013 18:07

If the bobble is by your head then "as long as you want the fringe to be", obviously.

BubblegumPie · 10/02/2013 18:08

Blush yes... obviously

Grin thanks Trills

Sunshinewithshowers · 10/02/2013 18:08

Leave out your fringe, cut it in afterwards, gradually.

Pull ponytail to about ear height.

Trills · 10/02/2013 18:10

If you have "a fringe" then don't include it in the ponytail.

If by "fringe" you mean "the slightly shorter bit of hair nearest your face" then put the whole lot into the ponytail and be aware that where you cut is how long it will be.

The shortest bit of your hair will be the distance from your head to where you cut. It is vital not to forget this! :o

hazeyjane · 10/02/2013 18:12

I too hate going to the hairdresser, ans cut it super short for years to avoid.

However now my hair is long, I get it cut every few months, I tried the MN haircut and it looked shit.

BubblegumPie · 10/02/2013 18:15

Just did it!

Surprised at how good it looks

CooEeeEldridge · 10/02/2013 18:16

Argh slatterly i do feel your pain! I'm with hazy ^ though, I used to hate hairdresser too, and is a matter of finding a good one that you can say 'stop doing THAT'! Too. My hair is long, layered and wavy. Should be fine to cut myself, and it was passable but there's really no comparison to a decent hairdresser! If you f it up, you're going to have much more hairdresser findling than now!

CooEeeEldridge · 10/02/2013 18:17

Findling=fondling!

GlitterySkulls · 10/02/2013 18:19

don't do it- i did it at hogmanay (completely sober) & it was a disaster, ended up with a weird mullet-like 'do. it was awful!

Fakebook · 10/02/2013 18:19

Do it! I did it in December and it turned out brilliantly. I've had loads of compliments and shocked faces when I tell them I did it myself. My hair is quite thick and dead straight.

CooEeeEldridge · 10/02/2013 18:20

Mullet is the most apt description Glittery!!!!

CaffeineAndKeyboards · 10/02/2013 18:21

Nooooo!! I did it yesterday because I thought, well, this time it will go differently to 4 years ago. No it didn't!!! Thankfully I could get in at the hairdressers, and while I did entertain him with my story he made me promise to never ever do it again!!!

FanFuckingTastic · 10/02/2013 18:22

I did mine because I didn't have the strength to get my brush through the knotted mess that day, so pony tail and cut. It's alright. Needs tidied I think.

Fakebook · 10/02/2013 18:23

The trick is not to tie the pony tail so close to the skull so even if you do cut it shorter than expected, you've given yourself leeway for mistakes.

cocolepew · 10/02/2013 18:23

Sorry didnt see your post. What I mean is if you have a side parting put the hair over to the side with the most hair IYSWIM?
Not explaining that very well am I? Hmm

MrsKeithRichards · 10/02/2013 19:10

Don't, just don't.

MrsLettuce · 10/02/2013 19:14

I must say, the reason I stopped was because it started to look seriously dated...
