Not to rush back to the shop with unintentionally shoplifted item

Went into town today, bought a new rucksack. Didn't look inside before buying it.

Got it home. Opened it up to look inside and there is a purse inside. Purse has a price sticker on for £9.99.

Now I suppose I've technically stolen this purse, although I didn't put it in the rucksack in the first place.

So I should take it back, right? But I wasn't planning to go to town again for another couple of weeks, I don't have time/inclination to make a special journey.

You're all going to tell me I have to take it back, I realise that.

But it would be OK to wait until I'm next passing, right?

So I'm probably getting the checkout operator in trouble for not checking inside bags.

Probably, yes.

But that checkout operator does need to be reminded, to prevent real shoplifters.

I'd just 'have forgotten' the receipt when I take it back. Oops.

Post it back as cheaply as possible?

Have rung, they do want it back, I've explained it might be a couple of weeks.

So I will go to customer services. They don't seem to be that bothered about shoplifting tbh - the shop is in a shopping centre, with an exit directly to the multistorey carpark. People are always walking through there and setting off the "sorry, you must be stealing something" alarm - but nobody ever chases after them.
