To be panicking about going to the hairdressers tomorrow?

hippoherostandinghere · 06/02/2013 20:32

I have an appointment to get my hair coloured in the hairdressers tomorrow, the first time a hairdresser has dyed it in almost 5 yearsBlush but I'm getting really nervous. I always feel so clueless and stupid in the hairdressers like I never know what I want done.

What I want is for then to do an all over solid colour, a nice bright blonde. My hair is currently a dark blonde/ light brown mess! I've been colouring it myself since then. So they can do that right? One nice all over colour without worrying about mesh/highlights etc. I would also like a nice sweeping side fringe and a few inches off.

So I need to man up and not feel so stupid. Will they be able to do a nice solid colour over my currently ugly colour?

I'm sure you'll step out looking like a million dollars! It sounds like you know exactly what you want, so just explain clearly then sit back and relax! Enjoy it xx

I'm a hairdresser and I much prefer it when clients bring me in pics, I can see exactly what they like and there's less chance of a miscommunication problem. with the all over blond that is possible, however they will have to take into consideration your natural hair colour and the colour that's on the mid length and ends. why don't you want highlights?

BadgersRetreat · 06/02/2013 20:43

i have mousy brown/slightly grey hair and with a full head of highlights i am blonde...

you might find it looks more natural than an all over colour, with way less rootage....just a thought...

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 06/02/2013 20:45

I was going to say perhaps they'll do it in stages but an expert has stepped up, phew. Hopefully they'll suggest something that suits your skin tone too. Hope you trust them to do a good job, try and relax.

hippoherostandinghere · 06/02/2013 20:53

See this is why I hate going! I don't have a clue. I wanted the blonde to look natural and I thought highlights would still show my roots/ old colour. My natural hair is a mousy brown, not nice at all. I don't have any pics Hmm

My favorite 10 or so days of the year are the days I get my HAIR COLORED. YABVVVVU. Relax and have a fun adventure!

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 06/02/2013 21:03

Thing is, a solid colour might look flat and matte, not explaining it well but maybe they'll raise the shade a few notches and perhaps add some highlights after? (Looks round frantically for er1507).

BadgersRetreat · 06/02/2013 21:05

deffo take some photos of what you like and hairdresser can tell you your best options. Describing it is so hard

HildaOgden · 06/02/2013 21:05

The roots in a block colour would show up fairly rapidly,I'd imagine?

littlewhitebag · 06/02/2013 21:07

My natural colour is mousy brown grey. I get blonde highlights -several different tones to make it look natural, and have done for years. I don't have as many problems with roots as people i know who get an all over colour. The tend to use foil to put in highlights these days. It is painless and easy.

hippoherostandinghere · 06/02/2013 21:08

I'm looking forward to after its done, just not getting to there!

I know what you mean about the solid colour looking flat. If I just got highlights would they cover my darker roots? Or would I need a solid colour first then highlights?

BadgersRetreat · 06/02/2013 21:12

depends how dark your roots are compared to the rest i guess...i have never had to have an all over tone done first, but my natural colour is grey not that dark

hippoherostandinghere · 06/02/2013 21:17

Ok so they're not that much dark really, just a shade or two. Right so it's highlights I need. Thanks for that. I hope she'll do it ok as I phoned to book and asked for an all over colour and cut. Grin

I get a colour put on then highlights occasionally (foils, hooray) but I tend to feel they dry out my hair so not keen on them every time. My roots now need sorting out every 5-6 weeks sob. To add to the fun, have just realised my eyebrows definitely some colour, they too are getting white silver hairs... .

HildaOgden · 06/02/2013 21:19

She will do a great, you'll feel brilliant afterwards Smile

HildaOgden · 06/02/2013 21:20

great job, that was meant to say!

Bonbonchance · 06/02/2013 21:21

Def take in pictures (even a combination of a few) and/or look at hair magazines they're likely to have in the salon. My hairdresser is great at showing me pictures too that he thinks goes with my vague descriptions, and using the shade charts. He's really good at suggesting subtle things (like combining a bit of another colour for shine/richness/whatever) so explain to yours all your ideas and make sure you're happy with their suggestions before you get started. Enjoy!

LouMae · 06/02/2013 21:26

Don't be scared! It's only hair! I've been every colour under the sun, it grows out! I never like blonde highlights, I loved the all over block bleach blonde, much more striking and edgy.I'm currently bright red.I hate dull or subtle colours!

theoldtrout01876 · 07/02/2013 00:57

I know exactly what I want, hairdressers over here just dont get it :o
Ive explained and explained and explained it doesnt matter I get what they pick up out of the conversation, not what I really want.I cant even get bright "bold" colours as they are not common over here.
A trip to the hairdresser is a crap shoot( an shes been doing my hair for 20 years, got the cut down pat, which is more than most, but cant come to terms with the colour)
I have very short hair, considered "funky/punky" here,NOT EVEN CLOSE,just a short hair cut but that in its self is unusual here
Im giving up and accepting what I get:o

ripsishere · 07/02/2013 01:23

Me too old trout. The last time I went to the hairdresser, I got a young boy (20ish). He first of all sighed at how much hair I've got, then set to like Edward Scissorhands, then cut his finger looked as if he would burst into tears and walked away and out of the back of the shop never to return.
My hair has the ability to tip someone over the edge.
