This is not an AIBU but we received our new statement and they have put us on a much higher tariff - 15p kw instead of our usual 9p. This is a 60 percent increase from May.

Dh phoned to complain and they stated they had to ask our permission to put us on a lower tariff. Does that make sense, yes if you work for N power.

So please check your statements and complain .

Years ago, Like about 15 I switched to N power, every 3 months I phoned and asked for a bill and they said they'd send me one, they never did. As time went by I became increasingly concerned that this was going to come back and bite me on the arse even though I was saving money every month to pay for it. This went on for over 3 years. Then when I phoned up to ask for a bill the guy said, why are you asking for a bill? you don't get your electric from us.

I Phoned some company to find out who I did get my electric from. They said N Power. I phoned N power back, they insisted I didn't get my electric from them.

So I phoned Norweb " If I get my electric from you, and set up a direct debitm do you promise to send me a bill every quarter and take the money every month?" I asked.
" Obviously," was the response from the bewildered Norweb employee. So I switched to them.

I never got a bill from N power I got 3 years free electric instead... result!

I am nearly £400 in credit with nPower. When I phoned and said I'd like some of this back they agreed ....but only if I increased my direct debit to £130 pmHmm .
My comment thay I had built up a credit on much less was quite lost on them. I cancelled the DD instead land will reset it up in a months time.

did you have a tariff that recently ended? They cant put you onto another reduced tariff without your permission as they normally have a tied in period and they can't just tie you into a deal without you saying that that is what you want them to do. My deal is coming to an end soon and I will be put onto their standard tariff unless I phone and request an alternative one as their fixed rate deals, etc have a tied in period where they will charge you if you end the deal early. Makes sense to me.

agedknees · 05/02/2013 19:52

I love yes we had a deal but they can put you on a high/standard tariff and not ask your permission.

it's a cop out. And how many people do not read their statements properly.

Would you really rather they put you onto a deal you were tied into? Didn't you know your deal was due to end? I got a letter advising mine was ending and the tariff I would go onto if I didn't contact them.

Just making sure other people who are with npower know what to expect.

Npower are shit. They once sent me a bill for £10,000 for a one bed flat I'd only lived in for a fortnight and we had a key meter so weren't even being billed in that way.

I completely know where you're coming from, OP!
Signed up to a contract with NPower at the beginning of December for gas and electricity on economy7. Approx 18 month contract, but the rates looked very reasonable compared to other options. After chasing them several times over the coming few weeks, they eventually sent me a contract 8 weeks later(!). The rate on the contract they'd sent me was 2 pence per kwh MORE than the rates I had agreed to when I signed up for it!! That works out as approximately 20% more than the price I agreed to, and bear in mind I had had NO communication from them in the mean time, only me ringing them up chasing them for a contract! I phoned them AGAIN and put in a complaint, told them they were immoral to advertise one price and then put people on a contract for a different price (I'm not proud of that but it made me so angry!) and eventually they have agreed to put me on the contract I originally signed up for at the lower price (although I am still waiting for written confirmation of this!)

Having said that, I am yet to find an energy company who doesn't try this sort of thing - I've just moved house and it took a lot of phoning around to find one who didn't say they had to create an account for me in order to give me any information on their tarrifs.

Bottom line - I echo your sentiment, OP, please everyone check your contracts carefully and complain if they are trying to rip you off!!
