Give a 19 month old a lollipop to eat when they are walking about playing with other children? Or am I a bit precious?

I admit I may be a bit precious about food in general, I don't really see the need for sweets when children are so young, although DD has had the odd bit of cake, chocolate etc.

But a lollipop? Surely there's no reason to give one to a toddler and it wouldn't be safe whilst they are wandering about anyway, would it? Confused

YANBU, I hate seeing children walking around with things in their mouths, even big children, it seems to be exactly the moment that they fall on their face -like DS the other day when he decided to walk around with a piece of train track in his mouth Hmm.

CrapBag · 05/02/2013 18:23

YANBU.

I don't really like my DS who is 5 having lollypops, I saw the whole thing come off in a childs mouth before when she was about 3. She could easily of choked.

Especially don't like children walking around with food anyway. And I don't give sweets to DD (2) except on the very rare occasion she has seen DS with some and she has had a couple. I don't see they are necessary at this age. They will eat plenty when they are older.

My 2 year old loves lollipops. And often walks about with food. Meh

My sister did this when she was about 18 and walked snack bang into a lamp-post. Now has two fake front teeth that the NHS won't replace and it'll cost her 4k to redo ...

YANBU

I am very relaxed about food in general but this is one of the few rules I have for the dc

CrapBag · 05/02/2013 18:32

Big when I done my first aid course recently, the instructor told us that the main reason children choke on their food is because they are allowed to walk around with it.

Meh.

HumphreyCobbler · 05/02/2013 18:32

I can't stand this. And round lollipops are serious choking hazards.

CloudsAndTrees · 05/02/2013 18:33

YANBU.

Apart from the choking risk, and the falling and being more hurt than they would have already been risk, it will just confuse them when they get to nursery and school and they are told they aren't allowed to eat while walking around.

Natasha that is surprising!! I wouldn't like that either. DD is 2 and I won't let her have a lolly. DS has those drumsticks on occasion. I cringe when the hard lollys are put in party bags. Most people wouldn't give boiled sweets with is effectively what a lolly is and they don't tend to stay on the stick anyway.
