To expect a taxi driver to do a 6 mile trip?

I needed a taxi earlier so called, told lady in office where I wanted to go and waited for my taxi. Strapped baby in, got in and told driver where I was going only to be told "sorry its too far away I can't go that far"

So got out, unstrapped baby, called a taxi from a different company who happily sent one along. I also phoned original company to complain and got told "that's right love they can refuse any journey they like maybe he just didn't feel like going to X" Well why send him then?

AIBU to expect a taxi to go 6 miles on city roads at 11 in the morning? Is there something I've misunderstood about the purpose of taxis? Confused

That's a bit strange--surely the office tells the driver where you want to go before pick-up?

Not feeling like it is a pretty pure way to work.

How odd. And 6 miles isn't surely that far?

I've had the opposite, got in a taxi at a taxi rank to be told its too close and not worth their while. Bloody things, hate using them.

YANBU to expect a taxi driver to make the trip that you asked for on the phone.

YWBU to complain that a driver at a taxi rank did not want to drive where you wanted to go, because then it's their choice.

I had that in London once Blueraincoat though to be fair to the driver I didn't know the area at all. He directed me and it turned out to be about 30 seconds walk away Blush

YADNBU to expect the taxi driver to take you to the destination you told the office you needed to go to.

What a weird taxi company. Clearly, never use them again and tell everyone you know not to too

Depending on the taxi licensing regulations where you live, cabbies may not be allowed to refuse fares. We once reported a London taxi driver for refusing to drive us to a station from London City Airport. He said it was too short a journey but then he wasn't carrying suitcases either and actually, the regulations didn't permit him to be so picky.

If your local taxis operate as private hire vehicles then they can probably do what they like but refusing business seems like a fairly stupid idea.

I wouldn't have minded but where I grew up is quite rural and whilst it was only 10mins in car would have been a very hilly hour long walk! But I guess they do have a right. Still annoying though. A very honest taxi driver stormforce!
