Not to let my pre-schooler scoot miles away from me near busy roads..

I seem to be the only person I know that doesn't do this.. Obviously I don't mean literally miles away, but a long way passed grabbing distance. They just strike me as too little for this to be safe. But as I am in such a minority I wonder if I am missing something...

Yanbu, my boy is 5.5 and I still don't trust him to do that, he has his head in the air, only thinking about his mates he can see across the other side of the road etc. Nooo way.

pigletmania · 05/02/2013 09:12

YANBU at all. I saw a little boy 2.5/3 on a scooter, mum someway behind, he rounded a corner so was out of sight f his mum and mum still dwadded behind and did not quicken her pace. It surprises me the number of parents putting their trust in a very small chid who Is still not yet mature enough to learn fully about safety

My twins are 4 and after months abd months of training to stop at driveways and roads I let them go further ahead. I can't keep up with them tbh but just tell then to stop if they're getting too far away. Took dd a long time to stop on command but she does now! I had to be very strict, they had to walk home whilst I had the scooter a lot before learning I was serious. I keep them a lot closer when it's busier or just don't take the scooters. Yesterday they biked until we got to the busy road, them I chained them up and we walked the rest. It seems safer.

YANBU. I often feel like the only one who doesn't do as well this but you have to trust your gut. It is not worth it to me for the chance that one slip of the steering and DS could be under a vehicle. It does happen sadly. I didn't let mine till much older and even now don't like it. I don't like to see kids running in front either without holding hands near busy roads. trust your gut and keep your DC safe.

SucksToBeMe · 05/02/2013 09:46

YANBU I have got better at letting DS hand go when we are walking along roads but i've purposely not let him learn to ride a scooter as i would have to jog alongside with my hand on his shoulder Grin

atthewelles · 05/02/2013 11:09

YANBU. It is also unfair on other pedestrians (particularly elderly ones) to have very young children scooting around with no adult nearby to control them and stop them flying into people. An idiot mum who lived near my parents used to let her small children fly around corners on their scooters. My father was elderly, frail and used a walking stick and wouldn't have stood a chance if he happened to be out for a walk when these kids came whizzing around the corner into his pathway.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 05/02/2013 11:15

YANBU but you shouldn't be judging other people either. Our dd is tiny and often gets mistaken for a preschooler, even when she's in her school uniform.

ApplePippa · 05/02/2013 11:17

YANBU. It's driveways that scare me the most - there is absolutely no way a reversing car can possibly see a pre-schooler hurtling down the pavement.

AnnaRack · 05/02/2013 11:25

Yy and some peopke bring them in museums too. Totally inconsiderate.

JamNan · 05/02/2013 11:28

YANBU
Frightens the life out of me when I see it.

tholeon · 05/02/2013 20:26

Thanks all, good to know I am not alone!

YANBU, anyone on a scooter on the pavement out of the reach of an appropriate adult is scary both for the safety for of the child and for anyone else on the pavement.

I do speak however as a person with spinal cord traction so I'm not stable and a fall have a high risk of paralysing me.

fairylightsinthesnow · 05/02/2013 20:49

you know you can get these tether things for them> Halfords sell them, means they can scoot but not get far ahead.
