To keep ds off school tomorrow?

Need the MN jury please? It might be inpart for selfish reasons.

He was off for 3 days last week due to nasty cough, sore throat, he felt like he had a temperature, he was waking up all night and had even wet his bed which is unlike him. I was a bit reluctant to keep him off after the first day as he was up and playing, but he wouldn't eat he said he felt bad and was waking up all night.

I took him back Friday thinking he was definitely more than ready to go back, but it seemed to really take it out of him and apparently he'd had to sit out at playtime as he was too tired, teacher said he was not with it at all.

He doesn't seem to have improved much over the weekend, he's still got a horrble cough, isn't eating much and is being a quite grumpy/tired, but he is up and playing (not now he's in bed!).

I don't have to work tomorrow and am tempted to keep him off to give him another day to rest, maybe even take him to GP to check there is no chest infection or anything. Then there is a bit of me that thinks if I send him in and it makes him worse I'm not going to be able to have any more time off work unless it's unpaid.

What to do?

Keep him off if you don't have to work. If he isn't fully recovered and you send him back it could wipe him out again and then you'll end up having to take time off to be with him.

PhilMcAverty · 03/02/2013 21:44

There are some pretty nasty bugs going round at the moment. If he's been poorly over the weekend too, then keep him off.

Pancakeflipper · 03/02/2013 21:45

SparklyJ - I would let him rest at home. If it's one of those nasty virus's around then it seems that as much rest as you can get is the cure.

One day of rest may mean he can get through the rest of the week of school.

ilovesooty · 03/02/2013 21:45

I think I'd keep him off and try to get him to the GP. He doesn't sound well.

MrsMiniversCharlady · 03/02/2013 21:45

I'd probably reassess the situation in the morning tbh. They can improve really quickly and if he wasn't ill enough to send home on Friday and he's had the weekend in between then he may well be OK at school tomorrow.

MerryMarigold · 03/02/2013 21:45

I would keep him off. My husband had something nasty (and now a friend has it too) which kept him off work for 10 days. It was really difficult to get over. Also go to doc. If you can get a morning appointment, you'll be able to check about the chest infection and if that is definitely fine, perhaps he could go to school in the afternoon.

Keep him off and take him to dr for check up. My 2 yr old had this sort of thing over Xmas and took about 7-10 days with antibiotics to get better.

NorksAreMessy · 03/02/2013 21:46

Keep him off. Convalescence is sadly underrated, and even if he is getting better, a day of rest and cuddles won't hurt at all

SirIronBottom · 03/02/2013 21:46

I'd keep him off. The only scenario in which I wouldn't would be if it's one of those bullshit academies where they make you get 326 letters from 6 different doctors per day of absence, on pain of being marked with some kind of branding iron and locked in the school's basement.

ripsishere · 03/02/2013 21:56

My DD is unlikely to go to school today due to her sore throat. She seems much improved from her rigors of Saturday night, but she is knackered by the infection she has.
Fortunately, I took her to the doctor yesterday, got some antibiotics and a med cert which is essential here.
DH reckons she's well enough to go back. I don't.

mumofthemonsters808 · 03/02/2013 21:56

I'd keep him off, the lie in will do him the world of good. These horrible bugs are lingering for weeks and even though the symptoms do not seem as strong we are still drained by them.I'd also do as you suggest and try and get him in to see the doctor (good luck) just incase it is something that requires antibiotics.

sparklyjumper · 03/02/2013 22:08

Thanks, I'll go for the majority vote and keep him off. I'll take him to GP to to make sure incase it is an infection rather than a virus.

I would never normally keep him off for coughs and colds and he's had 100% attendance up until now but he's definitely not himself.
