Really annoyed - school trip & medication

Ds 10 was going on school trip 2 nights (3 days). Accompanied by principal and one other teacher. Before I signed the form to let him go I spoke to principal as Ds is on Beta blockers. He needs to take them night and morning. Principal said no problem write it on the form and send them in box clearly marked.

Ds came home yesterday having only taking two of the twelve tablets as for the first day or do he couldn't find them and rest of the time he just forgot. No teacher at any stage asked if he had brought them or if he was taking them.

DH then gave out to DS for not being responsible and taking his medication. In my opinion - He is a ten year old child he should not be responsible for medication!

DH does not think I should complain to school as he is in last year and no more school trips and no harm came to DS. Beta blocker box and leaflet clearly state do not stop taking suddenly.

I think school very irresponsible and lucky to get away with this.

DS takes the Beta Blockers for migraine prevention.

Am I making mountain out of molehill??

My dd was on daily antibiotics and had to use a catheter morning and night when she went on school camp aged 10. After I sent in the initial medical form I was asked to meet with the teacher in charge of first aid at camp to go through exactly what was required in terms of administering meds and whether she would need help dd with her catheter. I was asked to sign additional forms in respect of the exact medication and all parents had letters confirming that medicines should be handed to the first aid teacher on the morning they were going away (in a labelled bag). I thought this was a pretty standard policy, we've done similar for Brownies and Guide camps and have always had to sign form when dd needed to have medication during the school day or at her childminder. OP, if you weren't given very clear instructions or asked to sign permission forms, I would be questioning whether the school has an adequate system in place for dealing with pupils medical needs on trips.

I think I will bring it to thier attention so they can change the form to say "GIVE TO A TEACHER" . DS says others had meds too!!

I think you are right to bring it to their attention so they can make it explicitly clear that medication must be handed to a teacher.

My ds went on a residential last term, and on the letter, and at the meeting, and in a reminder email, the teacher stated that medication must be handed to her, and no one else, on the morning of the trip. I thought she was going over the top by banging the same point over and over again, but this thread has shown me why she probably felt she had to!

I have just found the letter in the recycling and it says "Please make sure children have any medication they need clearly marked with thier name on it."

It might be worth asking to see the schools risk assessment for the trip so you can see how they have thought about the issue of medication when planning the trip.

What type of school is this? I'm surprised an LEA approved the risk assessment if it doesn't cover medication procedures.
