To think my DH doesn't actually NEED to keep nearly 24 years of payslips

Just that really! Grin

no probably not, but after saving them all this time it would seem like a waste to throw them away! In 20 years time it will be interesting to look back at the early ones maybe? :)

Lovelygoldboots · 01/02/2013 19:11

Oh I feel your pain, my DP keeps everything and not in any real order. Just stuffed in boxes in the garage and I don't really know what's in there. I am in the process of throwing loads of it out but it is paralysing knowing what to keep and what to chuck.

neverputasockinatoaster · 01/02/2013 19:11

Shhhhhh titty........

He's already found his first ever payslip and thinks it needs archiving!

I was going to show him the thread but already I'm not!

Lovelygoldboots - DH's are all filed lovingly in a small ringbinders.....

My house is filled with toot! He is a squirrel but sees nothing wrong in his nesting! Mind you my BIL has every box from every appliance he has ever owned stacked up in his weeny flat!

YANBU!

I don't think my DH needs to keep 22 years of bank statements but he won't be told.

neverputasockinatoaster · 01/02/2013 19:15

AND my MIL thinks I am U because I haven't kept all the things I own in their original boxes......

DH drew a sharp breath when I got rid of the box my salad servers came in......

When DH and I moved in together, he had all his bank statements from when he first opened his account in his teens, bags and bags of receipts going back to when he started university. He didn't want to just chuck them as they were confidential. wonder what he thought anyone was going to do with 10yr old receipts from Tesco?. So I bought him a shredder Grin

APipkinOfPepper · 01/02/2013 19:17

Meant to say - YANBU!

wonkylegs · 01/02/2013 19:17

I've still got my first payslip.... I was very proud of it at the time & reminds me of a lot of hard work.
I don't have all my bank statements though. I do have hoarder tendencies so I try & limit sentimental things into a big memories box.

Lovelygoldboots · 01/02/2013 19:17

neverputasockinatoaster, there was a mouse nesting in one of DP's boxes. Clearly they are polar opposites Blush Smile

Moknicker · 01/02/2013 19:18

My DH takes the cake though. Found a neat little stack of Waitrose receipts from 2007 in the study!!!!!

He did look mildly embarrassed about that.

I make up for it by not filing anything.

neverputasockinatoaster · 01/02/2013 19:19

DH has just disclosed that he also has ALL his bank statements from when he opened his first account. He is 46.

He has no idea this is not normal behaviour........

He has just revealed that I too have a stash of bank statements...... Not on purpose I don't!

APipkinOfPepper · 01/02/2013 19:20

Oh yes - the boxes! Mind you, they can be useful when you move house (assuming you still have the appliance / item that came in it!)

andubelievedthat · 01/02/2013 19:22

well i am sort of on his side on this one only because years ago at a place i worked a person who had retired , when they came round to visit , told us he could not get the full state pension cos he had not paid enough "stamps" > i know the tax office is supposed to correctly keep all such info but as i have no faith in govt. deptartements/civil servants , i think he is a smart fella, and bet all your home finances are fine and dandy ! >well done him i say !

BackforGood · 01/02/2013 19:27

I'm a hoarder, but have been able to reach the compromise (with myself) of keeping one payslip and *one banks statement for each year.
It is quite interesting to see what you were paying for things 20 years ago, and how things change - bit of social history and all that - but you can do that from a sample, you don't need them all. Wink

neverputasockinatoaster · 01/02/2013 19:36

andubelievedthat - yes, our finances are definitely well ordered and well looked after!

I just don't have his attachment to 'stuff'...... I appreciate the care he takes of our finances and bills etc, I really do but I know I couldn't do it!

Ah well, he won't change and I don't expect him to! He's lovely and I wouldn't swap him for the world. I'd just like less paper in our lives!

OP posts:
jamaisjedors · 01/02/2013 19:42

We keep all our payslips and bank statements! They don't take up that much room and as andubelievedthat said, payslips might very well be useful for calculating pensions.

I bet there's other clutter you could get rid of.

munchkinmaster · 01/02/2013 19:55

But you would only need the p60 end of year not all 12 if you needed to check NI etc surely?

OhIWishThereWasABook · 01/02/2013 19:59

Mr Trebus!!! Grin

Or is that just mine and my sisters 'in' joke.

Please let me not be the only one who knows this reference Blush

piprabbit · 01/02/2013 20:00

I get rid of most stuff after seven years - but I do keep the odd thing out of interest in a historical archive which I plan to bequeath to my DCs or the nation (haven't decided yet).

WileyRoadRunner · 01/02/2013 20:05

It depends my DH has all of his. He has worked for various councils and when made redundant they attempted to say he had a weeks break between jobs in local authority that meant he would only get 12 years redundancy instead of 20,

I was thankful he had kept all of his payslips which ultimately proved that he was entitled to 20 years!!!!

FayeKorgasm · 01/02/2013 20:06

I know who mr Trebus was. A real character. His hoarding was a result of war time hardship in Poland I think. Poor old man.

GlaikitFizzog · 01/02/2013 20:09

I know who mr trebus is! Bless him!

Out financial advisor told us to keep all ours. He said it is the only record we have of our national insurance contributions and we may need this when drawing a state pension.

Sounds crazy I know but I get 12 little bits of paper each year and I reckon they will all go in a single box file.

If I can find them, my filing is awful.

Does a p60 keep all the same info just summarised for the year?
