To feel I did something nice today?

Me and my friend took our babies to a local playgroup. Was the first time I have been. As we got there this other lady and her baby were there for the first time, and she was asking us about it, and we talked to her and included her all the way through, rather than ignoring her. She was lovely and hadn't been to any groups before as she said she was nervous about talking to others, just like me. I'm not meaning this in a boasting way, but it felt nice to be warm and friendly to someone who needs it. We are all going next week.

Erm .... yes of course that's nice. You know it's nice. Everyone would agree that it was nice.

Why feel the need to act like a saint about it?

ChristmasJubilee · 01/02/2013 14:11

I think that's really nice. I left a toddler group "in the olden days" because some of the parents weren't very friendly. I am quite shy and have difficulty talking to strangers. You probably made that ladies day.

Geekster · 01/02/2013 14:11

Because I've been feeling just like her, everyone ignoring me in a roomful of Mums and babies and I've been feeling miserable, grumpy and fed up recently and it just made me feel like I'm not such a shit person after all.

You may never know what a difference you made to her day. You deserve your warm glow! Smile

MrsVJDay · 01/02/2013 14:13

That's lovely. I really hope someone does the same for me when I start. Ignore the grumps! Smile

WandaDoff · 01/02/2013 14:17

I met one of my very best friends in the world the same way at a toddler group about 15 years ago. Smile

LondonUnderGround · 01/02/2013 14:19

I'm not saying you are a shit person.

We do good deeds to selflessly help people, we don't do it to make ourselves feel good or so we can boast about it.

redandyellowbits · 01/02/2013 14:21

I think that's lovely. I remember being the lonely mum at playgroups, everyone else seemed to be so cliquey. But I didn't know anyone in my city then (just moved there). I was so desperately lonely.

I tried a new group and met a mum like you. She introduced me to stacks of people and 5 years one I have lots of friends I met via her.

So I think you did a really really lovely thing!

Come have a Brew!

Geekster · 01/02/2013 14:22

I didn't do it to make myself feel good, I would like people to do the same to me, but I have been totally ignored in similar circumstances and know how horrible it feels. And I don't mean it in a boastful or saintly way.

Hmm

The OP is not boasting. She is spreading the warmth. Besides which, this is the internet you don't know HER to say she is boasting.

For all you know I lick puppies to life with my tongue.

Aaaw, of course yanbu.
I think sometimes when you have little ones it's much more difficult to get anything much done other than tend to the needs of your baby so it's always niceto feel that you've made a positive difference to someone elses day, I remember leaving a toddler group in tears the first time I went as everyone ignored me, I could have done with someone like you being kind to me OP! Thankfully 10 years on I am much less shy so would be ok now in situations like that Smile

IrnBruChew · 01/02/2013 14:26

I'd say its the normal thing to do and comes naturally? The alternative being ignore the woman? -gives self pat on the back-

AngelsWithSilverWings · 01/02/2013 14:27

I think it's sometimes really had to pluck up the courage to join a new baby group. So it's lovely when people try to make newbies feel welcome.

I am really grateful for the warm welcome I received when I turned up at one with my then 2 year old after moving into the area.

Geekster · 01/02/2013 14:30

Believe me the lady I spoke to isn't the only one trying to make friends. We only moved to the area last Tuesday and I was in the lucky position that an old friend already lives here and has a ds only two months younger than my dd. If I hadn't had her here it would have been so much harder. I never make friends easily and was so fed up with this move, having to start all over again. This lady has been here since September and it was the first group she has been to.

For all you know I lick puppies to life with my tongue Oh I SO want to believe that

OP you did do a nice thing but your post does have a tinge of 'doing it for Chariddy ...and self publicity' about it - but I am sure you didn't mean it to.
