to think that we might not get a mortgage because of DH's condition?

DH has MS(multiple sclerosis), still works but had to reduce his hours due to fatigue. The house we live in is not adapted to his needs, as there are loads of stairs. We are thinking of moving into a bigger and more adaptable house. AIBU to think we probably won't get a mortgage because DH has MS?

Try an independent mortgage broker who can 'shop around' for you.

Omnishambolic · 30/01/2013 14:47

I don't see why his MS should make a difference per se. A lender will look at how risky you are - how much you're looking to borrow, what your salaries are, you'll no doubt want insurance and that may be more expensive.

I'd go and talk to a broker who knows the market and lenders' requirements.

My stepdad has MS and is relatively young (not even 40) and hadn't had any problems getting a mortgage.

Sashapineapple · 30/01/2013 14:51

It may depend on the type of MS he has and if he is on any drug therapy. A broker should be able to answer that for you

As a side note has you DH tried taking extra Vit D, I have MS and take 10,000iu a day and that really helps the fatigue.

Thanks for all you replies. It's reassuring, as I was worried that we might not be able to move.
Yes, sashapineapple, DH takes vitD and follows the George Jelinek programme. Have you heard of it?

Yes, I'm on the Swank diet updated with Jellinks latest research, they are both very similar. It really makes a difference. I also drink 2 large glasses of juiced green leafy stuff a day which gives a massive energy boost. I also take a lot of other supplements and have never felt so good. www.msrc.co.uk/index.cfm/fuseaction/show/pageid/772

We had no problems whatsoever getting a mortgage and I have several severe/complicated medical conditions and work part-time only due to these. I do however have to pay rather higher than normal life/accident and illness insurance but I can understand the reasoning behind that. Hopefully you should have no problems.

I should it will be fine. A girl friend got a mortgage last year from a high street bank even though she has terminal bowel cancer. They didn't ask about her health just wanted to see her wage slips and her bank account details.

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS · 30/01/2013 17:14

I've never been asked about my earth when applying for a mortgage. You just need to prove income (via salary slips and/or your bank statements) and proof of employment. It should be absolutely fine and not be an issue at all.

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS · 30/01/2013 17:14

My earth?! My health!

MythosLivetheDream · 30/01/2013 22:16

Actually, does anyone know whether we'll be able to get insurance as we've already had a payout for critical illness?
