The etiquette of reporting a thread

PeppermintPasty · 29/01/2013 13:03

I am posting in AIBU as my question is prompted by a thread on here.

I don't think I have ever reported a thread, oh, I may have done on a long running one where the not-so-dp turned up, but that was an easy thing to do, and the OP desired it.

What are the dos and don'ts? Ive read the guidelines but they just say report, without any guidance on what is, and what is not, "done".

WRT this particular thread, I was thinking of reporting to try and establish if the poster was, as she was saying, someone who had not posted before. This is in question on her thread Is this wrong, ie would it adversely affect her anonymity, her right to come on the site? -I am not going to btw, but it threw up these questions.

And if you do report, should you always say so on the thread itself? If yes, why-is it good thread manners?

Bad punctuation. 4th para should read:

"This is in question on her thread. Is this wrong...."

if you feel something isn't right. Report and let mnhq make the decision.

As for whether you say on the thread or not is up to you.

HecateWhoopass · 29/01/2013 13:07

No. You're not supposed to say so on the thread. That's considered troll hunting I think.

anything that breaks this is reportable.

MNHQ say that they would rather people report if they have any concerns at all.

I bet sometimes they regret that Grin

NormaStanleyFletcher · 29/01/2013 13:08

I would tend not to say on the thread if I had reported it because I had doubts about the poster and whether they are genuine. By saying that on the thread you are troll hunting, and I would leave the hunting to MNHQ, and TSS who DNCOP.

GrimmaTheNome · 29/01/2013 13:10

Use your own judgement; and then MNHQ will use theirs.

If you're reporting something so obviously wrong that lots of other people might also report, probably a good idea to say so to prevent MNHQ being deluged.

You can also report good things like Chat that ought to be in Classics.

DearOldWrinklyMum · 29/01/2013 13:10

I would report that thread, yes.

I assumed it had been done already. In fact, has it gone alreadY?

DearOldWrinklyMum · 29/01/2013 13:11

But to answer your actual question (sorry!), I report but don't mention it in the thread. I don't post at all if I think troll. Just follow guidelines, quietly report and let MNHQ decide.

PeppermintPasty · 29/01/2013 13:13

I've seen plenty of posters say "I'm reporting this thread" without mentioning trolls, so just wondered if that was the way to go, more out of politeness I suppose Grin

HecateWhoopass · 29/01/2013 13:15

Yes. They're not supposed to Grin

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 29/01/2013 13:17

If I think it might be a troll I would report without saying anything. If on the other hand it was a thread that was a blatant attack on someone then I would say I am reporting e.g. someone started a thread saying some very nasty things about Neon Roberts mother and I had no qualms in telling them that I had reported the thread.

This.

It's really annoying when people suspect troll (and it's not blindingly obvious) and shout that they reported the thread. Makes them seem about 6 years old.

Pandemoniaa · 29/01/2013 13:35

I've never knowingly reported a thread but if I felt strongly enough that reporting was appropriate, I'd do it quietly and keep this to myself. I wouldn't announce my intention on the thread itself since that seems the quickest route to a complete binfest.

I also think you have to separate yourself from the reporting process and the subsequent consequences to any specific poster you have reported. Everyone is required to observe the posting guidelines and take responsibility for what they post. If they choose not to do this then they shouldn't be surprised at MNHQ taking whatever course of action they think appropriate.

SantasHairyBollock · 29/01/2013 13:41

I've reported plenty. Sometimes they stay, sometimes they don't. I report far more for spam/unsubtle advertising though and only a few for being possibly hairy handed truckers.

If you feel iffy, just click report and type in the box what's dodgy. Eg. they said last week they have 2 week old twins but now they have 6m old triplets and they have no money for gas...seems odd. They will check it out.

But add the thread to your watched list so you get to know if it goes poof Grin

Fakebook · 29/01/2013 13:47

I say my piece first and then report. I haven't reported anything for m

Fakebook · 29/01/2013 13:47

Months though.

PeppermintPasty · 29/01/2013 13:52

This is all really interesting. I suppose I think the op I'm on about isn't a troll in the traditional sense. I actually think she's completely desperate and changes her "backstory" to post on here every so often, but the tone and the scenarios are similar.

Of course I could be very very wrong. Interesting though, I guess if I did report on that basis, MNHQ would check it out.

I report occasionally,if I think someone is being offensive. If it's an amusing troll,I settle down with a glass of wine :o
I rarely say I've reported, makes me feel like a kid telling tales.
