Not to boycott tax evading Starbucks

keemanaanandcurryon · 29/01/2013 12:33

Just because I have a massive inappropriate crush on one of the young, fresh-faced baristas who works here?

I'm sat here nursing my skinny cappuccino watching as he deftly heats paninis and asks folk if they want whipped cream. It's costing me a fortune and I know it's not going into the tax coffers.

YABU even if the scenery is nice, the coffee is not good

cuttingpicassostoenails · 29/01/2013 13:58

He must be very lush indeed to tempt anyone to drink Starbucks shite coffee.

Neighbourhoodwatchbitch · 29/01/2013 13:59

YANBU - the chocolate cream frappacinos are to die for...

But saying that I've not actually had one since the tax evasion story came out because I don't live near one!

Neighbourhoodwatchbitch · 29/01/2013 14:00

We need a picture of this gorgeous young man before we can decide...
:-p

Fakebook · 29/01/2013 14:02

YABU. Firstly, their coffee is disgusting. Secondly, they're a rip off. Thirdly, that's worrying stalkerish behaviour, but I think you're only joking and you really wouldn't go in there everyday to just stare at a worker...would you?

ThingummyBob · 29/01/2013 14:04

Most starbucks are franchises.

Its the parent co that dodges tax and shafts its franchisees the actual person you pay for your coffee is more than likely a fully paid up member of the tax paying working class in the UK.

He/she will still have to pay large amounts to the parent co for the privilege of trading as a starbucks franchisor if you buy coffee or not. The parent co will still not pay any tax on it. Eventually the franchisees will all go out if business and join the unemployed. Stabucks will continue to operate all over the world, avoiding taxes wherever possible.

Makes not one jot of sense to boycott starbucks imho.

Never been in a Starbucks but I shop online at Amazon so I'm just as bad as you are - other than the stalking bit of course ;-)

AmazingBouncingFerret · 29/01/2013 14:10

Couldn't possibly comment until I see a picture of this bloke.

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 29/01/2013 14:45

No pictures, sorry. While I'm happy to see hisbrown eyed beauty. Taking photos is a bit difficult if I don't want to look weird. Grin.

Am I wrong in actually liking the coffee? I mean, I do as that's why I started drinking there in the first place.

Fakebook - PMPL at creepy stalkerish behaviour! I wouldn't exactly consider sitting and drinking coffee in a public place stalkerish. It's not like I'm following the handsome chap home and hanging around outside his house for a glimpse.

YANBU. I went into one for the first time for about 3 years today. I had a very nice beef stroganoff pie which I ate cold because I was in a hurry.
The very sweet, and very young staff were concerned I may get a chilled stomach

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 29/01/2013 16:18

They don't have pies in my local Starbucks, but they have a nice Falafel Salad, which is almost considered to be an exotic food where I am (south lakes). Grin

I'd rather have a had a beef stroganoff pie. That sounds lush.

ComposHat · 29/01/2013 16:20

I have boycotted them for years as their coffee tastes of lukewarm and slightly bitter dishwater.

PartTimeModel · 29/01/2013 16:20

I boycotted them already as the coffee is really bad. Shame really as I love a good tax swerving boycott.

Keep fluttering OP

LaurieFairyCake · 29/01/2013 16:22

There are a few places I boycott but since I now buy pretty much everything from Amazon I'm a hypocrite Blush

maninawomansworld · 01/02/2013 08:56

TBH I dislike Starbuck coffee so I don't go there but lets all be honest and drop the mock outrage at their tax practices shall we?
I mean, if my accountant came to me tomorrow and said 'hey, I've got a perfectly legal way of reducing your tax bill to almost zero' I'd jump for joy, kiss the man on the lips and go and book a nice expensive (child free) holiday to celebrate!

Absy · 01/02/2013 09:12

Well, for a start they were not evading taxes - evading taxes is illegal.
They were avoiding taxes which is legal, and the scheme was signed off by HMRC, so if anyone should be boycotting anyone they should boycott HMRC (or the government) for allowing tax loopholes. And maybe point out to Cameron while he's wittering on about tax avoidance that as the Prime Minister, he's in a position to stop tax avoidance if it bugs him so much.

Ah, the hot Starbucks staff. A friend had a massive crush on one of their barristas and used to visit twice a day. It was a rather ruinous crush.

Scholes34 · 01/02/2013 09:42

If their coffee was any good, I could see it may cause me a dilemma. However, their coffee isn't good, so this is easily dealt with.
