I'm watching it now and I can't help getting that crawly feeling that I don when I've watched the Jeremy Kyle show, like looking at an open wound intended for people to gawp at.

I think the 2 women doctors are pretty sneery, Christian is the lesser of 3 evils.
AIBU?

Yeah, I'm not exactly sure how it works but I get the impression that the people who go on there do so because they are desperate for treatments that they couldn't get on th NHS (electrolysis, cosmetic surgery etc). I don't think any of the people, who seem genuinely mortified by whatever is wrong, would go on if not for this!
But hopefully after having th treatment their lives are improved, don't like that kind of freak show type tv though!

ShephardsDelight · 28/01/2013 21:27

Yeah , I think so, I think that makes it even worse IMO they have a responsibility not to exploit vulnerable people, what kind of country are peoples only access to life improving procedures by humiliating yourself on jeremy kyle.

yeah I agree, but then you get into the question of exactly what the NHS should be paying for. Personally, I hate the idea that people have to live with conditions that are easy but costly to put right, but I suspect that many won't agree!

foihnula · 28/01/2013 21:35

I always found it to uncomfortable to watch. Same as with J.Kyle! :P

porridgewithalmondmilk · 28/01/2013 21:37

I went on it once and I didn't feel remotely exploited. I was on for such a short amount of time that barely anybody realised and I got private healthcare treatment for a problem that had made me miserable for ages. Win win!

ripsishere · 28/01/2013 21:51

It is exploitative IMO, but it also sends out the message that you may not be the only person suffering with whatever it is that's ailing them. It could give you the courage to approach your GP about it.
It is yet more cheap telly to add to the jungle, BB house, dancing with iceskating soapstars who think they can sing............

fatlazymummy · 28/01/2013 22:00

No, I think it's quite educational.People tend to gloss over some of the more unpleasant side effects of being signifiantly overweight - hernias, skin rashes, cellulitis, incontinence eg, and I think this programme adresses these issues.
As a former obese person I find it quite motivating, it reminds me how life was so much more uncomfortable, and I never want to allow myself to get anywhere near that size.
Having said that, I think the participants are brave being filmed in such an intimate way, and it's not something I could have done. So good luck to them.

I love it, too lazy to type more.

I think it's good in the sense that it stops people feeling they are the only person with a problem, and gives them more confidence to go to dr's/recognise problems etc.
But I do feel sorry for some people on it, I know I would be horrifically embarrassed at some of it, especially any genital parts being involved. I think in some cases they should show the body and not the face, film from the back of the head when they are speaking for example.

selsigfach · 29/01/2013 00:03

I really can't understand the people who say "I've got this rash/growth/bent willy that's so embarrassing I've never shown it to my wife" but go on to drop their pants to the nation. Weird.

HopAndSkip · 29/01/2013 00:05

I've always wondered- porridge you might be able to answer this- Do you go on being told "Not every case is shown, but we may put it on tv so it will be filmed" or are the ones who are being shown in detail prewarned that it will be on air in detail?

sweetkitty · 29/01/2013 00:08

Was just going to say that same thing "I have a hole in my vagina or bum, I'm deeply embarrassed, can't have sex etc but stick a camera up there and let the nation see it?

Can you imagine the next day the guy across the road shouting "hey sweetkitty that's great you got the hole in your fanny sorted, looks good now" WATF

OTTMummA · 29/01/2013 00:11

Yanbu, one doctor just told a lady her hernia could have it's own post code! Rude bitch! I can see your war paint from fucking space, twat.

frustratedashell · 29/01/2013 07:01

yeah I thought the post code comment was rude and humiliating. Though I cant understand why people will show all their "bits" on tv, having said that I do quite enjoy watching it. Does that make me an awful person?

pigletmania · 29/01/2013 07:34

Yabu it's their choice they are consenting adults who are probably desparate because they are not getting the right treatment on the nhs and who cannot afford to go private. Some are so easy to rectify, but the NHS does not want to spend the money and fobs them off so they have to live with leaky bowls, prolapses, skin infections for the duration of their lives

porridgewithalmondmilk · 29/01/2013 21:33

Sweetkitty - that's not quite what happens though is it? :)

The "embarrassing" part does not equate to "I am too embarrassed to go to my GP about this." It means "I have a problem that often has long waiting lists or is cosmetic in nature and I cannot afford provate heathcare."

In my case, I had scarring due to a previous injury . It wasn't in a place immediately obvious (not my face) but all the same I couldn't wear many clothes due to it and certainly when it was hot I was limited. I was on very briefly, explained what had happened to me and was advised. I then had a cosmetic operation and now have lovely skin and can wear anything I want.

I wasn't embarrassed by going on, the "embarrassment" doesn't refer to that otherwise like you say it would make no sense.

I'll never understand why consenting adults doing something is a problem! I am a teacher (teenagers!) and told them I was going on and why and they were interested but not disapproving!

sweetkitty · 29/01/2013 22:25

Porridge - I'm glad you had your problem sorted and are happy now.

I saw one episode with this poor man who had had this weeping open wound on his anus for years, it looked agony, felt so sorry for him. I thought it terrible he had not been treated on the NHS (he had had it 4 years) I understand he must have been so desperate to have something done about it. In an ideal world people wouldn't need to go on these shoes to get treatment.

I just don't think I could bare my nether regions to the nation though.
