To expect a tinned stew to look like actual stew

PenisColada · 28/01/2013 12:37

I bought a tin of stew to eat as I am recovering from neck surgery and wanted something soft and easy to eat whilst I am recovering.

I don't usually buy tins or ready made meals and would usually cook from scratch.

The picture on the tin looked quite appetising with dark meaty gravy but when I opened it is was all pale and floury and not at all like the picture. I could not eat it as it tasted pretty floury and tasteless too. It was not a cheap / value / own brand .

AIBU to think it should have looked like the picture or are all tinned meals utter crap ?

All tinned meals are utter crap.

Sorry. Grin

Hope you're feeling better soon.

MissyMooandherBeaverofSteel · 28/01/2013 12:39

Yuck, yuck, yuck, my Mum used to force feed us tinned meat. All tinned meat is disgusting imo, have some soup instead.

How are you feeling after your surgery?

PenisColada · 28/01/2013 12:42

What do people eat that can't cook then ? Ready meals are too expensive.m

I am feeling sore and can't swallow easily hence the soft food.

What shall I eat ? I can't live on yogurt for long.

Gosh I did food science as part of a level chemistry, put me of tinned food for life especially meats....I only do tinned tomatoes and baked beans...

I imagine tinned stew and tinned dog food to look the same.....is it not so? Sorry not of much help here am I?

I think I would have bought ready meals instead of tinned for the convenience if I was recovering from surgery.

Sugarbeach · 28/01/2013 12:44

Soup?

Baby meals?

Look at annabel Carmel baby meal planner for inspiration? Most of her recipes freeze very well too.

Something like a lentil soup would be a lot nicer than something with 'meat that has never met an animal' in it.

Can no-one rustle you something up?

Hope you feel better soon Thanks

WilsonFrickett · 28/01/2013 12:49

Soup.
Ice cream (I know it's not 'normal' but you could probably do with the calories if you've not been eating properly for a while) you could add some pouches of fruit purée to that.
Smoothies.
Mashed spuds.
Bake a potato, scoop out the flesh and mix with grated cheese also.

Hope you fel better soon.

PenisColada · 28/01/2013 12:49

I think dog food looks more appetising and meaty than the stew. I am craving protein.

I have taken a photo and emailed it to customer services dept. and am awaiting response.

I did not expect fine dining but something edible would have sufficed.

Scrambled eggs?

Sugarbeach · 28/01/2013 12:52

And are you sure it is not horse meat.....?

Thanks get better soon!

Fakebook · 28/01/2013 12:57

The only things edible from tins are: tomatoes, beans, chick peas and spinach (when there is no fresh spinach available) and coke. Everything else tinned is shit. Literally. You live and learn eh?

PureQuintessence · 28/01/2013 12:59

You found shergar!

BertieBotts · 28/01/2013 13:07

Scrambled eggs YY

Do you have a slow cooker or casserole dish? Get some cheap already diced beef, pork or chicken, buy a bag of frozen casserole vegetables (if you don't feel up to hacking at whole ones) and a tin/jar of sauce or one of those packet mixes, shove it all in the slow cooker/oven (if oven, cook for 30 minutes to an hour longer than it suggests) and you'll have a nice big stew with soft meat, soft veg and not very much effort. You can always portion it out and freeze too.

CasperGutman · 28/01/2013 13:38

There's no reason a stew from a can couldn't be perfectly ok - you can buy perfectly pleasant cassoulet in cans in French supermarkets (although some of the cheaper ones are nasty there too).

If you buy something like that over here, it'll be horrible, because people who care about quality ingredients etc just don't buy stew in cans.

Ullena · 28/01/2013 14:38

I like tinned stew...

Crinkle77 · 28/01/2013 14:40

Tinned chilli con carne is not too bad. If you wanted to jazz it up you could add some extra cooked veg, baked beans etc... I have only ever used this when i really can't be bothered cooking. Would not normally eat it all the time but it's ok to have in as an emergency

Crinkle77 · 28/01/2013 14:42

And I have to say i love the tinned stewed steak. Fry up some onions, add a bit more water to make a bit more gravy and some pepper and it is yummy poured over mash and veg. Again this is only an emergency tea. ha ha

RandallPinkFloyd · 28/01/2013 14:46

Tinned meat is always bad news OP, sorry!

If you're craving protein maybe an oxtail or royal game soup? I think Baxters tinned soups are really nice. Or those pots of fresh soup from the chiller, the lentil ones can be really filling and very protein-y.

PenisColada · 28/01/2013 15:06

Mm oxtail soup is an idea.

I love Heinz tinned Spaghetti bolognaise. Delicious with toast! Might fulfil your craving for protein and it's certainly very soft in texture. Get well soon Thanks

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 28/01/2013 16:02

The only decent tinned food is heinz spaghetti bolognaise, t'is the food of gods.

MaxPepsi · 28/01/2013 16:02

Tuna? Soup? Rice Pudding? all very edible and not at all shit!

PenisColada · 28/01/2013 16:31
