does anyone ever think they can 'hear' electricity?

...or am I developing tinnitus?

Sometimes, when it's late at night. Everyone tucked up in bed and I'm the only one awake I hear a sort of pulsating, humming sound.
It's hard to describe but I only really hear it when it's very late, or should that be very early, and all other things are quiet.

I asked a neighbour about this and she said she hears a similar kind of sound occasionally and always wondered if it was the sound of distant traffic (we live close to a motorway) or an overhead plane, but surely at 2am or thereabouts traffic would be fleeting and not constant.

I reckon it's probably tinnitus but as a long shot I wonder if anyone on here thinks it may be something else that I can actually hear?

I can always hear my phone charger too and it drives me crazy with its high pitched hum. I usually try to charge it when I have music/tv on or overnight far away from me.

I only discovered what the source of the noise was when I charged my phone up in our bedroom one night. The noise kept me awake but DH couldn't hear it. He thinks I am weird!

Theicingontop · 26/01/2013 11:23

Me too. I go around switching the mains off and OH gets very annoyed. It doesn't usually help though, there's always something humming in my ears.

Our PC monitor emits this high scree when it's turned off but powered, and OH is adamant I'm insane Hmm

I've been camping in a field where the only sound heard for a mile or so was a cow mooing or a grasshopper, and I've still heard the humming. I actually think what I'm hearing is the sound of my own body in that case Confused

flow4 · 26/01/2013 11:25

You're welcome Tepid, and yes I get that too. :)

MerryCouthyMows · 26/01/2013 11:27

Nope. I hear it buzzing, and whining, ALL THE FUCKING TIME. It drives me to distraction!

MerryCouthyMows · 26/01/2013 11:31

My phone charger is a particularly bad one, but I can hear the whine of my NDN's TV when she leaves it on standby, even through the walls.

Cantbelieveitsnotbutter · 26/01/2013 11:35

My oh has been moaning about this noise in his ears for weeks. I've sort of just gone 'yeah yeah yeah'.
This morning jumped in his side of the bed when he went to work and ds was in mine. I heard it!!!
Come to the conclusion it's electric of some sort.

BaronessBomburst · 26/01/2013 11:35

YANBU I hear it all the time too. I can also smell wasps which people think is bonkers but my family have finally accepted that there must be something in it because I'm always right.

JaponicaTroggs · 26/01/2013 11:43

We have an extension plug thing attached to the computer in our bedroom. If it's left on I can hear it buzzing loud and clear, DH can't and thinks I'm imagining it. Angry

KenLeeeeeee · 26/01/2013 11:45

I hear it too and it drives me bonkers some days. I long to live in a cabin in the woods, far from electricity and all this technological gubbins.

I would need some sort of magical pixie dust to still bring me some form of internet though

GirlOutNumbered · 26/01/2013 11:45

I do! I can tell when something is on in the house.

chosenone · 26/01/2013 11:46

Yes me too. I did think it was tinnitus at one point and I do like to turn things off . At night its like an ambient hum. I seem to also have issues with electricity, blowing plugs, draining phone batteries and watches and even clocksHmm seem to change ! Never mentioned it to anyone though, glad I read this thread Grin

GinOnTwoWheels · 26/01/2013 11:57

I am often contacted by members of the public through my work who can hear 'the hum'/electricity etc.

Sufferers seem to be always women of about 50 or above, and I appreciate that it is very distressing for them.

However, it seems that there is no conclusive known source or treatment, although it could be a tinnutus related issue (I am not a medical doctor).

The other popular theory is that it is related to mobile phone transmitters or the electricity supply grid.

However, there doesn't seem to be a workable solution to getting away from it all as the internet and electricity generally follows us wherever we go and most people couldn't live without it for very long.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/01/2013 12:01

I know I genuinely hear electricity because I can tell when one of us has left a transformer plug switched on in the night and have to go and turn it off. I've always been able to, but the ability is starting to fade a bit now.

Can also tell when plug wiring is a bit dodgy, the object 'hums' under my fingers. Once our entire Christmas tree 'hummed' and it turned out to be a loose wire in the two way plug thing.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/01/2013 12:04

Now I've read the thread -interesting explanations :)

SummerRainIsADistantMemory · 26/01/2013 12:18

We have power lines going past the house and I can hear them very clearly. I'm convinced they have something to do with my constant headaches.

specialsubject · 26/01/2013 12:21

is there a wind farm nearby? They make a murderous low-frequency racket - although they probably aren't working at the moment. (basic flaw with wind power - sod all use in cold spells)

go round unplugging anything that doesn't need to be plugged in. There should be nothing running in the house at night except fridge and freezer anyway.

"The Hum" sounds interesting.

I have tinnitus in my left ear thanks to DH. On our honeymoon he crept up behind me in the hotel room and made a really loud "cuckoo" sound in my ear to scare me. I thought my ear was about to explode and that was the cause of our first argument after marriage. Idiot.

diddl · 26/01/2013 14:46

I have tinnitus.

Am almost always aware of it but especially at night when everything is quiet.

God Fake-I think I would have left him.

Although I´ve never found that sort of thing funny.

I used to go to listen to bands a lot & then had an infection, after which I had tinnitus, so not exactly sure what caused it!

deniecegb12 · 24/10/2018 07:18

I hear.the electricity too mostly late at night or wee hours of the morning. Sometimes I want to scream. Turn on the TV TO DROWND IT OUT.

Greyponcho · 24/10/2018 07:29

Well, I suppose that technically you can’t hear it, but you can hear the inefficiencies of it’s use/changing voltage. (Hence also why chargers etc get warm)
I can hear TVs/monitors etc on standby, iPhone chargers make a racket when they’re plugged in but the phone is fully charged. I’ve always been able to hear it, even after developing tinnitus (different frequencies, so I can tell the difference yeah, thanks brain Hmm )

For those who ‘feel’ it, if my electric blanket is on, we can feel a buzz if I touch DP

Greyponcho · 24/10/2018 07:30

P.s. have you tried mindfulness or tripping out certain fuses ?

bathshebaeverbusy · 24/10/2018 07:31

i can tell when my phone is going to ring - usually 5 - 10 seconds before!

Winkybum · 24/10/2018 07:54

Another zombie thread ressurection!

Lleddyn · 11/12/2018 19:18

Happens once before today and again this evening. All my electric seems to be working fine. Glad it's not just me!
