To knock on a door with a 'no cold callers' sign to ask...

...for a plastic bag for dog poo? I only realised I didn't have a dog poo bag when the dog had done a poo (I'm not the poo troll)! So I went to knock at the nearest house to ask for a plastic bag. The first 2 houses didn't answer, the third house looked like someone was in (fire going) but it had a sign about no callers, so I didn't know whether I could knock or not. As I was wondering, another dog walker passed so I called out and luckily he had a spare bag. Hopefully this will be enough to make sure I never forget again, but if I did, would you knock for a poo bag or not?

As someone who loathes both cold-callers and pooh on paths, I would sooner you knocked and asked than walk away and leave it.

HopAndSkip · 25/01/2013 22:39

I think I would go to the next house. My mum has a sign saying please don't ring the doorbell by her front door as she gets extremely anxious if the doorbell rings, and won't answer it, but will then panic about who it was/what they wanted/if it was burglars checking if someone was in etc.
If all else fails, find a huge leaf/stick and shift it right to the side or into a drain-whichevers nearer if its in the path, or if its in the grass then have a check for it when you next walk the dog and hope it's been avoided!!

Depending on where it was, if it was in the long grass, I'd probably just pretend to pick it up and walk on.

Again, depending on where it was, I'd just go back later and get it.

Although I've never forgotten the bags when I've taken dog out, but I'd rather leave it there than knock on some random, axe wielding madman's, house.

But 'no cold callers' means they don't want people trying to sell them shit, rather than don't call without an appointment - doesn't it?

HoHoHoNoYouDont · 25/01/2013 22:39

No, I wouldn't knock tbh.

HopAndSkip · 25/01/2013 22:42

Also, depending how long ago this was, bear in mind there could be children asleep in houses as it gets later on in the evening, so maybe best not to call at all in those circumstances.

we have a CC notice up
but if you knocked on ours I would have happily given you a bag(so would DH)

It was about 3 or 4 in the afternoon. I wouldn't have knocked at a possible bedtime, or if it was dark, even if there wasn't a sign!

I would sooner you knocked than left poo in the street. I have one of those clip on poo bag dispensers on the dogs lead that I bought after I was once in a similar situation.

I always seem to have masses of poo bags in my dog walking jacket pockets, so one day I just chucked my jacket on and went out. Only for the first time ever my pockets were empty! It was a horribly feeling, I was certain people were watching me and thinking "dirty bitch!" as I walked away - even though I only went home to get a bag and did go straight back. Now I can't forget them unless I also forget the dog Grin - problem solved.

*horrible

Yes I have one too now, absolute genius!

I wouldn't knock incase it was an elderly person or a person with a disability who would either find it frightening or a great big hassle.

deleted203 · 26/01/2013 22:13

I wouldn't knock. I tend to assume people who have these have made it clear they don't want strangers knocking on the door and dragging them out of their chair for whatever reason.
