To not want my house to be heated with bath water?

Iburntthecakes · 25/01/2013 22:27

Please settle this for me and DP.

After a conversation with colleagues DP has decided that it is a waste of money draining all that hot bath water down the drain. Instead if we leave it in the bath then the heat and the steam will circulate through the house thereby reducing our heating bill Confused

I've just had to deal with cold grey bath water two days running Angry

Please help him see sense.

Other uses for bath water I have heard include washing the car, and watering the garden.

Iburntthecakes · 25/01/2013 23:05

Yes, definitely no engineering works Crikeyblimey. DP fancies himself as an engineer but is clearly a bit hopeless. I don't think physics is his strong point either.

I admit to always leaving the oven door open after getting food out. I also turn it off 10 mins before food is ready to let it finish off in the residual heat (unless it's cake - cake is sacred).

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 25/01/2013 23:14

Another good way of saving money on heating is peeing in your clothes. It keeps you warm for up to 3 minutes.

Also think of the saving on flushing.

Jojobump1986 · 25/01/2013 23:16

Once the bath water is room temperature it will start taking heat from the rest of the house to maintain the temperature. Unless he's going to monitor the water until it's exactly room temp then it's highly likely that the water will be sapping energy from the house & therefore costing you more.

Iburntthecakes · 25/01/2013 23:16

Thanks purplestorm. DP says it sounds like a lot of work but I think if this might be a useful line to pursue.

I'm not going to suggest any more unusual heating solutions to him raven nor other uses for bath water wannabe Grin We'd end up living in a steamy and smoky house oven seriously needs cleaning with buckets of old bath water outside for the day he finally decides to clean the car.

PurpleStorm · 25/01/2013 23:16

Leaving the oven door open is a bit different though, because that tends to be a dry heat.

AgentZigzag · 25/01/2013 23:17

Shagging friction, keeps you warm for more than 3 mins I would say Tonde?

Nice linking in the saving on flushing though.

AgentZigzag · 25/01/2013 23:19

Talking about friction, when it's a bit parky out we all gather round the dog while she's scraping her arse along the floor.

Every little bit and all that.

AgentZigzag · 25/01/2013 23:20

And you'd be amazed at the heat the stand by light on the telly gives off.

Jojobump1986 · 25/01/2013 23:20

Disclaimer: I'm pretty sure this is scientifically inaccurate, but sounds logical enough that it might convince him! Wink

Oh dear, I made the mistake of telling my DH about this... "It's not a bad idea..."!

Iburntthecakes · 25/01/2013 23:22

Now I come to think of it, all this talk of ovens makes me realise this is not the first time DP has come up with crazy ways to heat the house. I have on more than one occasion found him standing in the kitchen warming his hands over the gas hob. Now my feeling is that this is a waste of gas - he claims its efficient because its 'more direct'.

OP posts:
wannabedomesticgoddess · 25/01/2013 23:26

My GM uses her gas hob to heat the kitchen.

PurpleStorm · 25/01/2013 23:27

Tell him that putting his arms inside his clothes and then sticking his hands under his armpits will also warm his hands nicely, and is much more fuel efficient than warming them on the gas hob.

Or maybe he should buy some nice warm jumpers and gloves to wear in the house if he starts to feel chilly.

apostropheuse · 25/01/2013 23:27

OP I sincerely hope he's trying to wind you up. Grin

Simple solution - pull out the plug!

Iburntthecakes · 25/01/2013 23:29

Jojobump Just tried that one. He's now waffling on about how leaving fridges open in closed rooms will increase the temperature of the room. He has clearly put too much thought into this already.

Am going to focus on getting him to consider Purplestorm's experiment.

Get him a slanket or a <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?um=1&hl=en&sa=N&tbo=d&biw=1018&bih=587&tbm=isch&tbnid=H5srmBhHwVDsFM:&imgrefurl=www.find-me-a-gift.co.uk/gifts/adult-hooded-onesie-winter-wonderland.html&docid=QnfZfTyf1KdyMM&imgurl=www.find-me-a-gift.co.uk/images/product_images/foo001_winter_wonderland_hooded_onesie_man.jpg&w=300&h=300&ei=VhUDUZiTJePA0QWaoICoAQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=461&vpy=249&dur=1828&hovh=225&hovw=225&tx=109&ty=172&sig=108848608164883084356&page=1&tbnh=145&tbnw=145&start=0&ndsp=20&ved=1t:429,r:10,s:0,i:114" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">onsie? (whatever they paid the model to do that job, it wasn't enough Grin)

PurpleStorm · 25/01/2013 23:33

How can leaving a fridge open in a closed room increase the room temperature?? [bconfused]

The fridge will be trying to cool the entire kitchen down! And the food in the fridge will go off sooner, which will waste the money you've spent on groceries.

Iburntthecakes · 25/01/2013 23:34

Ah but I'm not keen on dealing with DPs old bath water apostropheuse

And I fear the poor man is serious.

Do you have an alternative source of washing facilities OP? In which case, you could have a nice, hot, energy-efficient shower, and leave him to deal with yesterday's grey-green, greasy Limpopo bathwater. Top tip: if you leave the soap in, it makes it all the more attractive.
