my mum is ill with what she described as a gastro intestinal infection. i was at her house at the weekend without knowing she had diarrhoea and last night i had stomach cramps so i mentioned this on the phone and she told me that she would tell me what it was she had if i did end up getting sick but wouldn't tell me if i didn't Confused it must be bad if she wont tell me right? i'm worried as the dcs were there on sunday aswell, again no-one told me before taking them (they knew i was coming a few days before) that she was ill. should i be worried? mum stayed upstairs and no-one else in their house has gotten ill. mum has had lowered immunity from illness last year.

Confused Is she embarrassed that she has it? That's strange. I'd want to know incase you should be quarantining yourself from the dc etc and to make sure you get treatment early!

Tell her that you're sick then Grin do you know what her symptoms were? Tell her you've got them.

oh and 'gastrointestinal infection' - is code for bum gravy!

Booyhoo · 24/01/2013 17:55

i dont think she's embarassed. she's been a nurse then midwife for almost 40 years and has seen it all so no queasiness about anything.

dont know what her symptoms were. i did try and press her on the phone but she refused and said that if i was sick get to GP straight away and she would let me know then so i could tell GP what it was. i think maybe she doesn't want to worry me but i'd rather know if there's a chance we might already have it in our systems. also, i occasionally look after other people's dcs (she knows this- i have one here now!). i think i'm going to ring her back and say i need to know.

Will be Norovirus it's rife just now

pushmepullyou · 24/01/2013 18:57

I don't think a nurse would recommeend a GP visit with noro. If she has lowered immunity it could be Clostridium difficile which is a diarrhea-y bug that is quite common in people with lowered immunity and is often a hospital acquired infection. It's not very likely that a healthy person would catch it in the circumstances you describe but it can have antibiotic resistance so you would need to see your GP if you developed symptoms
