Should I go back and pay for this purse?

More of a WWYD. I bought a few items from a local shop yesterday, when I got home I realised a purse I had 'bought' wasn't on my receipt. It was missed. It cost £5. I think I will take it back and pay for it as I feel like I stole it, even though I didn't. Would you do that?

Yes I would

Purpleknickers · 23/01/2013 22:19

Yes otherwise every time you use it you will feel guilty. Plus it's a local shop and they all need support

nellyjelly · 23/01/2013 22:20

I would or it's bad karma.

I realised I hadn't paid for some 75p shower gel at sainsburys yesterday and was about to go back and pay when I remembered the out of date hummus I had been so,d the day before. So I reckoned we were even!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 23/01/2013 22:21

Hmm, part of me thinks it wasn't your fault, it was their fault for "missing" it on the receipt. I probably wouldn't even have noticed as I don't always check receipts.

I think it would depend on several factors - is the local shop an independent or part of a chain? Do you go in there a lot and are they nice? And how much hassle would it take to return it?

EndoplasmicReticulum · 23/01/2013 22:23

Nelly that's how I feel with supermarkets - it all evens out in the end. The random extra chocolate muffins I got with my shopping delivery make up for the fact that someone had squeezed my bananas.

CloudsAndTrees · 23/01/2013 22:23

Yes, I would go back and pay for it.

A few years ago I walked out of Waitrose on Christmas Eve having forgotten to pay for the turkey that I had ordered and collected along with all my other shopping. I realised when I got home and phoned them, they were kind enough to let me leave it until after Christmas to go back and pay, which I was obviously very thankful for as the car park and shop were heaving and I was already busy. I went back and paid after New Year.

DuchessFanny · 23/01/2013 22:24

Yes, you'll restore their faith in good customers :)

andtheycalleditbunnylove · 23/01/2013 22:25

i once sneaked a paintbrush back into b+q because it had accidentally come home with me without being paid for, amongst a couple of hundred pounds worth of stuff.

it was very hard to accomplish and i felt guilty, but i couldn't bring myself to just go to the till and pay for the thing. i have anxiety issues...Grin... no, i do, really....

LynetteScavo · 23/01/2013 22:26

If it was a local, independent shop, yes I would.

If it was a large chain, and I would have to drive some way and pay for parking I wouldn't.

When I've been back to pay for things in situations like this, people are usually perplexed, and don't really want to take my money. Grin

MrsKeithRichards · 23/01/2013 22:26

I wouldn't.

andtheycalleditbunnylove · 23/01/2013 22:27

do you know manchester? i had a weirdo basket, like a fishing net, in m+s, putting my stuff in. it didn't feel like a basket and i forgot it was there. i walked out of m+s, over the bridge into the arndale, into currys, chose an item, got assistance and it was only when i was paying for my item that i realised i still had unpaid-for stuff from m+s over my arm. oh yes. so when i'd paid at currys, i just walked back to m+s...

lovethesun1 · 23/01/2013 22:28

Yes, I would.

Bluemonkeyspots · 23/01/2013 22:29

But you are never supposed to buy your own purse, it's bad luck! (just to complicate your dilemma)

So either keep it so you have not "bought" it and risk bad karma or send someone else in to pay and explain.

Fairyegg · 23/01/2013 22:29

yes you 'should' but in all honestly I wouldn't. I have also worked in shops for a few years and have never had anybody come back to pay for an item they weren't charged for, so I suspect I'm not the only person who would think 'bonus - free purse'.

BeanJuice · 23/01/2013 22:30

I wouldn't bother if I'm honest.

katiecubs · 23/01/2013 22:31

nope - their fault.

BluelightsAndSirens · 23/01/2013 22:32

I would but only because I like the selfish buzz of surprising someone with a good deed - it feels good!

HoHoHoNoYouDont · 23/01/2013 22:32

If it's inconvenient to go back there (location etc) then just go to their website and donate a fiver online.

MsVestibule · 23/01/2013 22:33

I would. It's just the right thing to do, and you know it!

Geekster · 23/01/2013 22:33

Bluemonkeyspots I will have to get my DH to take it back and pay for it then. I think it's a chain shop. It's the first time I went to it yesterday as we only moved into our new house yesterday so it's a completely new area.

If it's a local independent store I would absolutely go back and pay for it.

If it's a large chain / supermarket, I wouldn't bother, it's nothing to them and their mistake.
