A rant about my neighbour's inconsiderate parking

I live in a small close and the neighbour in question is at the entrance to the close. Neighbour has two large vehicles. They have off road parking but have chosen to absorb it into their garden rather than park on it. Instead both vehicles are parked on the road.

Neighbours seem to believe that they have the divine right to park outside their front door even if that makes the entrance to the close even narrower (new build so not generous) and forcing passing cars onto the wrong side of the road.

I know that what they are doing is legal but it is so inconsiderate to everyone else who lives in the close and has to squeak past them to get to their own houses.

AIBU to hope that a delivery or dustbin lorry overcooks the entrance to the close and side swipes one of their wretched vehicles?

If it's a junction, I think it's illegal to park within a certain distance of it. There's something in the highway code anyway, I'll see if I can find it

Here you go:

242

You MUST NOT leave your vehicle or trailer in a dangerous position or where it causes any unnecessary obstruction of the road.
Laws RTA 1988, sect 22 & CUR reg 103

243

DO NOT stop or park

near a school entrance
anywhere you would prevent access for Emergency Services
at or near a bus or tram stop or taxi rank
on the approach to a level crossing/tramway crossing
opposite or within 10 metres (32 feet) of a junction, except in an authorised parking space
near the brow of a hill or hump bridge
opposite a traffic island or (if this would cause an obstruction) another parked vehicle
where you would force other traffic to enter a tram lane
where the kerb has been lowered to help wheelchair users and powered mobility vehicles
in front of an entrance to a property
on a bend
where you would obstruct cyclists? use of cycle facilities except when forced to do so by stationary traffic.

I had a neighbour up the road when I lived in my previous house who had one parking space but two bit flash cars. Parked one on his drive and the other completely on the pavement, so literally not in inch in the road. Angered me every day of my maternity leave having to push my daughter's pram onto the road to pass by. One quick email to the council where I berated him for obstructing the path and explained how long it had gone on for and despite council saying it would really be a police matter if I wanted to take it further (which I didn't as thought it irritating but an unecessary use of police time), they must have contacted him because after a week or two he stopped parking like such prat and left the pavement free for pedestrians! Might be worth dobbing these wiseguys in to the council too, especially if they are blocking the junction in any way?

Write down what Pelvic said and post it through their door.

Loads of people park their cars on corners by junctions round our estate. It really winds me up - it's dangerous.

mugglebert · 23/01/2013 22:24

If it's a new build estate there is a almost certainly a covenant in everyones deed that will state no parking on the road, if the road is private and managed by a management company you could ask them to enforce the covenant... However this will affect everyone and may make you very unpopular.

MissMarplesMaid · 23/01/2013 22:35

I'm not sure that they are illegal because of the precise design of the entrance to the close. They have also had the police out any number of times - neighbour is a serial worrier and complainer about everything. Police havent apparently told them to move.

What they are is sodding annoying and selfish. It is a new development so parking is a premium for everyone and these jokers take extra space and then leave notes on cars which park across their dropped kerb even though they dont park on their drive!

I feel that we are caught. I dont want to create a neighbourhood dispute I just want them to be a bit more considerate.

No covenants in my deeds. The development is private and there is no management company.

I am just ranting here as there isnt a solution unless these people forcibly discover that parking on a corner at the start of a close is a stupid idea.

Sad for you

Cheeky sods leaving notes on the other cars!

Maybe they'll move house soon. Maybe put some estate agents' brochures through their letterbox?
