You have Gods in buddism but not a divine God. Therefore as you worship something, then I would say it is a religion.

Cant be doing with all that orange though

cumfy · 21/01/2013 21:37

Most buddhists don't think it's a religion as such ..... do they ?

SanityClause · 21/01/2013 21:38

DD1 has learnt in RE that it isn't a religion.

andtheycalleditbunnylove · 21/01/2013 21:39

i teach r e. we say we're doing 'six world religions' and include buddhism, but when we're teaching buddhism, we say its a 'belief system'.
we don't do gods in buddhism, but we don't get far into it.

PersonalClown · 21/01/2013 21:39

From what I've read, don't most Buddhist class themselves as Spiritual rather than Religious?

But the "gods" as such, inhabit some sub-optimal realm to be avoided by aspirant bodhisattvas.

Teahouse · 21/01/2013 21:42

As there is no one definition of religion, it is almost impossible to say what is or isn't one.
In common parlance it is; as andthey says, it is one of the big six. But if religion has a deity, then that would count Buddhism out.
Good lunch OP figuring this one out!

HollyBerryBush · 21/01/2013 21:44

OK, swiftly off to google ans a dharmin site :

Moggallana was the second of the foremost monk disciples of the Buddha. He was known for his ease at supernormal abilities including reading the mind of others, using the mind to reach heavenly realms, speaking to gods and ghosts, walking through walls, walking on water, and traveling at the speed of light.

if there are no gods, who was Moggallana talking to then?

Thisisaname · 21/01/2013 21:45

I can't eat human, elephant, horse, dog, snake, lion, tiger, bear, leopard, and hyena flesh. Some are completely veggie to kinda answer that kim147 but I'm allergic to (some) meat anyway Grin.

I consider it a way of life, well it is, every thought and deed is examined and it requires absolute honesty.

What is the point of the thread?

Birdsgottafly · 21/01/2013 21:54

There are different strands of Buddhism, some are vegan, others can eat meat.

Limnoria · 21/01/2013 21:56

My DP always answers questions like this with 'Define your terms.' What do you mean by religion? Because YABU to ask a question which could have whatever answer you choose. If religion is going to church every Sunday, believing that the pope is gods representative and that the bread and wine magically turn into Jesus's blood and flesh, then obvs buddhism (and islam, scientology, protestantism and the 5:2 diet) is not a religion.

If you have a more inclusive definition, then you can include whatever you want.

WMittens · 21/01/2013 22:10

I don't think it's a religion - more a philosophy.

Buddhist principles are great - but I can't resist meat.

I agree, to me it is more about the teachings than believing in the supernatural.

Buddha did eat meat on some occasions though, and some Buddhist monks are permitted to eat meat.
