Angry with this Asda woman

Dryjuice25 · 21/01/2013 15:14

I went to Asda a couple of days ago with my baby in the pram. Got a basket and did my shopping. I then went to the checkout where I got some bags but managed to put most of the shopping like potatoes, fruit juices etc in the pram basket without bagging it. I paid for the lot and as I was preparing to leave, I realised I dropped my gloves in the supermarket. I went to the customer services to enquire about it on lost and found items but they didn't have them.

I made my way back to the exit but suddenly, this woman ran after me and shouted, "did you pay for your shopping.." I froze in shock. I was incandescent. She was accusing me of stealing? Asda shoppers just stared, beholding the drama unfolding.

At this point the other colleague who had served me said "yes she has" to which the accuser just went "Oh, I am going by the shopping under the pram that's all". I was too shocked to react, I just left but I'm sure I didn't hear an apology from this woman. I was shaken by the whole thing and I was upset and I'm still angry about it. AIBU or was this woman justified in assuming shopping thrown in pram basket without asda shopping bags might be stolen. I had other packaged shopping hanging off the pram handle too.

What makes me so angry is that I didn't use the bags in my attempt to do my share to be green. AIBU to be still angry of to want an apology

yabu
I have forgotten to play for stuff that I have put under like that
I am sure heaps of people have.
it was your mistake not to bag the stuff

heidihole · 21/01/2013 15:21

It's a shame that it happened but I can see how the mistake happened. Better for them to ask then to potentially get food stolen.

FWIW i put my shopping under the pram with no bags too so I can imagine the embarrassment.

this its just one of those things though.

hellsbellsmelons · 21/01/2013 15:21

I wouldn't worry about it.
You did nothing wrong.
You paid for it and you could have proved it if necessary.
I wouldn't still be angry at all - no.
She was just doing her job and checking.
No harm done.

hiddenhome · 21/01/2013 15:21

YANBU I'd have punched her Shock

heidihole · 21/01/2013 15:21

I dont agree with threesocks that it was your mistake not to bag the items. I don't think you have to use bags if you don't want to!

noblegiraffe · 21/01/2013 15:21

People nick stuff from supermarkets all the time. She was just checking you weren't one of them. Seeing as she doesn't know you from Adam I don't understand how you could be offended that she might think you were a shoplifter given that you had a pram full of unbagged shopping.
And it's not like she said 'STOP THIEF!' and frisked you in front of everyone, she asked you a reasonable question in the circumstances.

Yabu. How was the asda lady to k paid you'd paid for them or not? Why didn't you put them in a bag?

DuchessFanny · 21/01/2013 15:24

Problem here is plenty of people have popped something on/ under a buggy then totally forgotten about it ( and of course there are people who DO steal ) so they do check, they have to ...

MissyMooandherBeaverofSteel · 21/01/2013 15:26

When I used to do that I got them to put the sold tape on it to save confusion. The woman was just doing her job, I don't think there's anything to apologise for really.

TheFallenNinja · 21/01/2013 15:28

Was she an Asda employee?

beenalongtimecoming · 21/01/2013 15:28

I froze in shock. I was incandescent. She was accusing me of stealing?

Why did you not just say "yes, just paid thanks, do you want to see my receipt?" and carried on with your day? Unless she was really screeching at you and beckoning security staff over I wouldn't have assumed she was accusing you of stealing, more checking whether you'd paid so that if you hadn't and had forgotten the stuff under the pram you'd have a chance to go back and pay before leaving the shop (when you would actually have been guilty of theft if you had forgotten to pay for stuff). Don't think you should have used bags, good to be green, but there's no harm in an assistant just asking if you've paid.

Dryjuice25 · 21/01/2013 15:29

Lightrain- I thought I was saving their bags and now I know better, this will never happen again.
BeerTricks- Exactly!
Noblegirraffe- I see what you mean but to me it felt like she said "stop thief" This was the first time this has happened to me so I did feel shaken up by it.
I see what you guys mean but don't y'all think I deserved an apology?

What Duchess said

beenalongtimecoming · 21/01/2013 15:30

Oh and yes, YABU and YABU to expect an apology - it would have been nice and polite of her to apologise, especially if she wants to appease customers but I don't think she did anything wrong that she needed to apologise for.

DeafLeopard · 21/01/2013 15:31

"this woman ran after me and shouted, "did you pay for your shopping.." I froze in shock. I was incandescent. She was accusing me of stealing?"

She wasn't accusing you, she was checking whether with you as you might have forgotten.

If she had yelled "Oi lady you haven't paid" then yes an apology would be in order

FunnysInLaJardin · 21/01/2013 15:32

wouldn't have happend at Waitrose..............

ConfusedPixie · 21/01/2013 15:34

YANBU to be shocked, but you were incandescent that you thought she was accusing you of stealing? Really? Just produce a receipt and it keeps them happy, most people forget to pay for something at least once in their life, and then other people do steal and unfortunately people use their buggy's to hide items to steal too, she was just doing her job, though she could have been more discreet about it.

Dryjuice25 · 21/01/2013 15:36

TheFallenNinja. Yes she was an employee.

Beenalongtimecoming- Well, this had never happened to me before. I have always put my shopping under the pram unbagged and no-one ever asked me if I'd paid for it. I get what you say though.

I suppose I am posting to get a bit of perspective and now I think I over reacted internally and I'm glad I maintained my dignity and walked away without letting her know what I was thinking about the whole issue as I have been known to overeact in the past! I think I have matured well lol.
