Is it bad form to ask for money that I'm not entitled to but was told I could have?

Stepfathers dad died. We didn't get on (couldn't stand the bloke) but when he died he left a bit of money. My mum and stepfather both said they would be giving me £1000 of it. I said "oh no, don't feel that you have to do that ... " but they insisted.

I put it to the back of my head assuming it would be mentioned once and then never spoken of again but my mum kept mentioning it and then one week said "we'll have that money for you by Wednesday". So at this point I'm thinking "oh maybe they mean it! great - I'll book something nice for my holiday in March".

I booked a posher hoter than originally planned specifically because I thought this money was on its way and she's not mentioned it since!! 2 weeks ago was when she said she'd have it.

I know I'm not really entitled to it but they said I was getting it and I've kinda spent a bit of it now in anticipation. Is it really bad form to mention it to her over the phone to find out if I'm still getting it or not?

I think you need to ring your mum and ask. Tell he you booked the hotel knowing it was coming, so now you need it.

Sorry to hear about him dying. But I think you shouldn't have spent what you didn't have, relying on this money in the first place. But hindsight is a fine thing. Like you said, you're not entitled to it, so she doesn't HAVE to give you it. I would mention it in conversation in a kind of "did you manager to transfer the money ok, or do you need my details again" when did she say she would give it to you? How long ago are we talking? She might not be being malicious about it, just forgotten with the organisation if other things?

I don't think it's unreasonable to call her and say "Thank you for the money. I really do appreciate it and can use it to pay a bill I've got just now. Could you send me a cheque?"

It will be awkward but she insisted and promised and you spent it. Maybe you shouldn't have spent it, but you did. The world won't end.
