Bought DS a pop up ball pit and the instructions say 'do not attempt to hide in this product in a thunderstorm'! Who on earth would try to hide in a shallow fabric collapsible ball pit during a thunder storm?! Anyone else experienced health and safety gone mad?

The HSE Came out recently saying how daft a lot of "health and safety" advice is.

The pediatric drugs with a warning not to drive made me laugh. Or the peanut brittle which warned it contained peanuts

stargirl1701 · 19/01/2013 18:42

Yup. We got a fantastic box of cooking equipment at school. It was huge, on wheels, good lid. It came with a risk assessment from the council - 'Adults and children must not ride the box along the corridor'.

So, we (staff) rode it in playground. Grin

The thing is, when you see some completely random warning like that, it's probably because someone has done that and then tried to sue them.
Like 'do not iron clothes while wearing them' and all.

A cover to protect your car windscreen in winter

"Do not attempt to drive with this in place"

OK Confused

devonshiredumpling · 19/01/2013 22:24

a friend of mine is a sister in casualty and her whole department had the fit of the giggles when a patient came in with a fractured leg after falling down the stairs (did not notice a puddle on the floor). TUURNS OUT HE IS A HEALTH AND SAFETY INSPECTOR [GRIN]

Bearfrills · 19/01/2013 23:23

When I was newly pregnant with DS my manager did a H&S risk assessment. I was told that 'due to health and safety law' I was no longer allowed to use the stairs and had to take the lift. I only worked on the first floor so the staircase was only 10-12 steps tops. I also had to have two 'buddies' assigned to me who would assist me down the stairs if the lift was out of order or there was a fire Hmm

Wolfiefan · 19/01/2013 23:26

The pyjamas for kids that warn to keep away from fire?!?!?
Really?

ThreadPirateFanjoBeard · 20/01/2013 00:05

I think my favourite is the superman cape that states 'this is a toy. It does not enable you to fly' bastards! I want my money back!

One from my Ex - at work, member of kitchen staff cut her finger quite badly on a cling film dispenser, blood pouring, stitches needed etc.

So they sent the H&S officer to the kitchen to check.

H&S officer said the dispenser had to be disposed of because it was faulty. Taking the dispenser to the skip, he promptly cut his OWN finger quite badly (blood pouring, stitches needed...) whilst throwing the dispenser into the skip!

MerryCouthyMows · 20/01/2013 00:34

The worst of it? The workplace is a Hospital, so he had to be stitched up by colleagues that knew both his job AND how he had come to need the stitches!

HowTerriblyEngliscOfMe · 20/01/2013 03:11

We bought quite a big above ground pool years ago and I kid you not, the warning was do not move when filled with water. It wouldn't have been physically possible for a human to move when it was filled with water! They could have at least put, do not attempt to move when filled with water, but still, who on earth would be that stupid...

Made dp cry with laughter for a while though...Grin

AmIthatWintry · 20/01/2013 03:40

Bearfrills, sorry but your manager was an idiot. When (uneducated) people cite H & S for anything, I always ask them which part of the HASAWA is being breached. 10 times out of 10, they can't.

I just get a little bit sick of people constantly coming out with the H&S gorn mad shite, when a little bit of an enquiring mind will come up with the real reason for something.

Most of these so called safety notices are actually there because insurance companies want. To prevent litigation. Nothing to do with H & S. Really not

And some of it is utter rubbish such as a drama group having to lock away plastic weapons.

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1575924/Put-away-your-arms-drama-group-is-told.html

Er............ actually it was a publicity stunt, they didn't have to lock them away, but saying them did got the group in the national newspapers.

Morloth · 20/01/2013 07:16

A friend's health and safety certificate for their office arrived in a bag full of broken glass.

Some numpty in HR had framed it and then just tossed it in a regular envelope for delivery.

Was quite funny really.

Collaborate · 20/01/2013 09:37

Does anyone have a link to Amy guidance from the HSE about schools closing for snow? Seems to me everyone apart from primary school teachers can get in to work through snow round my way.
I've looked through a 2008 114 page HSE report but it doesn't mention snow.

The pop-up ball one is hilarious. Also love the idea of the teachers riding the wheelie box in the school playground.

But the warning on pyjamas is needed, sadly. Children have died from their clothing catching fire as they stood too close to an open fire (though these days I thought things like pyjamas were supposed to be fire retardant).

kinkyfuckery · 20/01/2013 10:51

The advice of not to hide in a ballpit in a thunderstorm is not silly. The fact that they have to state it because there really are people that are that fucking stupid is what is silly.
