I saw a documentary years ago about how it was made. Any old bit of shite from a cow, all mashed up in a mashing thing, then shaped into er....whatever shape.

Don't get it. Mashing and shaping is not that ££££.

On a slightly related note - saw the most revolting thing ever in a shop last week: chicken luncheon meat
Envy < def vom not envy

I don't know if the picture on the tin was a photo or an artist's impression. Either way, I wouldn't feed it to a dog

Stinky, I thought I was on the wrong thread, I scrolled to see if it was a bumsex Friday thread that I had missed.

EwanHoozami · 19/01/2013 10:49

knickers, I can't get into them either. I am usually chief packaging-opener in my house too

EwanHoozami · 19/01/2013 10:52

That doesn't read right. I can get into my own knickers.

Didn't even register as I typed that!

I love corned beef, I don't know if I would ever get round to making my own though. It's probably good for my waistline that it is pricey. Grin

Make your own corned beef here

yawningmonster · 19/01/2013 11:11

apparently corned beef is completely different here!
Here it is a large bit of silverside that you cook with peppercorns, golde syrup, spices and cover in water to slow cook...it is expensive now but haven't seen canned corn beef

FredFredGeorge · 19/01/2013 11:35

I think Corned beef increased in price relative to normal meat because it became a lot less popular so less volume, and because the import duty is less preferential towards it - From Uruquay (Fray Bentos isn't Argentinian), shipping frozen mince appears to be 0%, whereas corned beef is 16.6% And in general meat is now significantly cheaper than it was longer ago so corned beef is less cheap.

Corned beef in North America is often what we call Salt Beef, although they do have the same stuff as us.

VestaCurry · 19/01/2013 12:02

Some good explanations as to why it's become so pricey, thanks Smile!

Dh and dc's love it as corned beef hash so I buy it regularly.

Do remember that it's stuffed with sodium preservatives, so not good for anyone with high blood pressure.

TinyDancingHoofer · 19/01/2013 13:09

Because everybody loves it.

Just because something is cheap to produce doesn't mean it will be sold cheaply- see all apple products.
