To get a boy haircut?

BrittaPerry · 17/01/2013 19:31

I'm considering getting a quiff.

But...I'm 28, with two kids and the size 14, 36D body to show it. My hair is an uncontrollable mop and I have very little pateince with it, beyond dying it funny colours and messing it with my fingers. I'm worried I'll not look like the cool andrgynous beauty I envisage, and more like a spotty teenage boy with moobs...

Can it look good?

High maintenance OP. Short layered and choppy might work? Post us a picture? Smile

LaCiccolina · 17/01/2013 19:34

Yes but u might have to pay. How good is your hairdresser? Be honest with yourself. Or move to new one in hip environment. I like the mickey Cyrus type cut. I think it can be stunning!

I'd take photos of what u mean specifically and be careful of hairdresser and go for it! I'd also go blonde or brown with red in - in for penny eh?

Sounds fab!

LaCiccolina · 17/01/2013 19:34

Miley not mickey!

EmmaBemma · 17/01/2013 19:37

You can just get it cut short. A choppy pixie crop will do it, and then you can wear it as a quiff if you feel like it, or have it smooth and sleek, or just a bit messy and bedhead. I quiff up some days and I'm 34! I think it looks alright, I have begged friends and husband for honest opinions (as I don't want to look a tit either) and they promise they agree. Mine is currently shorn at the sides and longer on the top.

BrittaPerry · 17/01/2013 19:39

My hair is currently half red, half purple Grin. (Or, half orange, half brownish purple). I haven't set foot in a hairdresser for years - I either do it myself or make a friend do it in return for beer. Which could explain a lot...

Will attempt a picture (although it needs a wash and I have no makeup on) of me now, and find one of what I want, so you can compare and contrast...

oh yes though, short hair is suprisingly costly if you want to keep it looking good. I have to get mine cut every 5 weeks.

BrittaPerry · 17/01/2013 19:40

Oh, no, I did go to a hairdresser to fix an accidental mullet. I asked or a pixie, showed her a picture, she did a bob...

Can I not just go to a barber? They seem really cheap.

You look like you have 'good' hair for it. However, I found i need to wear lots of make up with short hair or I look like Boris Becker.

EmmaBemma · 17/01/2013 19:47

I'm struggling to think how the hairdresser could have got a bob out of an accidental mullet? You must be talking about rather longer hair than I've got. Length wise I was thinking Michelle Williams in her recent gamine phase, Mia Farrow in Rosemary's baby, that sort of deal.

Just checked your picture, I def think you would suit short hair. Go for it.

BrittaPerry · 17/01/2013 19:47

me now

Lol, I forgot there was still a picture of said mullet on here Grin

StuntGirl · 17/01/2013 19:48

I think you would suit it, especially with the glasses. I don't think there are 'boy' cuts and 'girl' cuts anyway, I just think everyone should go for the cut that flatters them the most, whatever length that happens to be!

I've had very short hair before though, and it does take a lot of maintenance to style it. Be prepared for frequent trips to get it cut and spending money on product!

EmmaBemma · 17/01/2013 19:50

Just to be a contrary bugger, I don't find it takes maintenance. Mine dries naturally in about 10 minutes. Then I rub some hair goo through it, mess it about a bit and that's it for the day.

BrittaPerry · 17/01/2013 19:52

And all the pictures I can find for aiming at are Morrisey or, er, Elvis Grin

PacificDogwood · 17/01/2013 19:52

You might find a men's barber will just not 'do' a woman's hair cut Hmm.

But yes, I do think short hair would suit you.
I had really short hair for a couple of years and loved the convenience of it, but you do need to get in trimmed every 4-6 weeks to keep it simple in between times.
I am currently growing it back out - chinlength bob at present...

A friend of mine gets a really cheap haircut (£5 or similar) from a v basic salon in the rough part of town (Glasgow) and always looks stunning Grin. Not sure I'd go in there by myself without introduction...

StuntGirl · 17/01/2013 19:52

xpost.

Oh wow I think you suit your current look loads anyway, but you would definitely look good with a quiff!

If you're not sure about taking the plunge how about trying for an asymmetrical cut first to see how you feel, longer on one side with a fringe you can slick back into a quiff or blow dry across. If you hate it it won't take long to grow back to your current style, if you love it it won't take much to go the whole hog!

BrittaPerry · 17/01/2013 19:53

I'm mostly jealous of DH and his brylcream styling ease. Also I've been spending too much time looking at drag kings lately.

Do it. It's only hair. It' could look great and if it doesn't, you can grow it out.

SavoyCabbage · 18/01/2013 06:51

Definitely do it. You will look great I think. I love my short hair and its far easier to style and look stylish than my long hair ever was.

MidnightMasquerader · 18/01/2013 06:57

You have a lovely slim face and actual cheekbones. Envy Do it.
