to send DS to school in trousers that are too long

His old ones are too small, and the new ones I bought online are a size too big. I've ordered ones that should fit, but they haven't arrived yet.

He is desperate to wear the too-big ones. They fit round the waist (adjustable buttons) but are too long. I said he could go to school in them just for a day or two till the new ones arrive (with them folded up at the hem, twice). My mum, who was taking him, was aghast and insisted he change back to the old ones.

So - I am a bit annoyed, but perhaps AIBU and it is indeed shocking to send a child to school in too-long trousers. He's 5, if that affects things.

Do you not own a needle and thread?

Or even a length of wonder web?

SparkleSoiree · 17/01/2013 09:43

I would have taken the hem up myself on the new trousers the night before so they were ready for the next morning. On that basis YABU.

You could have even folded them and pritt sticked them for a day until you bought a needle and thread.

ResolutelyCheeky · 17/01/2013 09:45

There may be no hems or knees left in those trousers when he gets home after walking on the hems and tripping over in them.
The turn ups will last about 10 mins.

Wonderweb sounds a good idea. Will look into that to keep in a drawer.

I am no good with a needle and thread (registered blind, though I wasn't any good before that either). My mum, very kindly, does name-tapes for us.

wonderweb.. it takes seconds to take a hem up with them

greenpostit · 17/01/2013 09:45

I would personally have sent him in the smaller pair as long as you could use the adjustable buttons to get the waist big enough. Then the only problem would be the shortness.

The turn ups will probably fall down on the long ones. I would think it would be more difficult for him to manage with the trousers possibly coming lower than his shoes - this will make the ends dirty and possibly rip them though being walked on.

Sounds like I was BU. That is probably why I felt so annoyed, because I was in the wrong.

I'd never heard of wonderweb before, but will get some. Love the pritt stick idea, I do have that but it didn't occur to me!

Wonderweb is a brand name

I think it's called 'hemming tape' or something?

Either way you should find it in most supermarkets.

BanghamTheDirtyScone · 17/01/2013 10:59

yanbu. Fwiw it took me about 3 weeks to figure out and turn up ds1's trousers last summer. I had to take up about 4-5 inches and even using sewing machine was too tricky for that size of turn up - I did most of them by hand in the end.

Wonderweb was frankly useless, sorry.

You could just tack them up for now - you know, big silly stitches just to hold them.

megandraper · 17/01/2013 11:27

thanks bangham, that makes me feel slightly better! Big silly stitches are about my level Smile
