To ask you to recommend a hypnotherapist?

Have you ever been to one?

Do you think they are generally helpful?

I saw one just once but wasn't hugely impressed, just wondered if it was this particular one.

I would like to see a good one if anyone can recommend one.

I generally am not a great believer in alternative therapies but I thought hypnotherapy might just work.

Posting in AIBU in hope of a response.

Depends what you're looking into alternative therapies for, really.

If you have a smart phone or iphone, you can get lots of free hypnotherapy apps, that might be worth a go before paying out to see one?

Looking for one in London BTW.

Don't have a smart phone/iphone.

Don't think the DIY approach is enough.

A therapist will tailor the therapy to you, so an app won't really help (a bit like reading a dictionary in the hope of improving your essay writing skills).

It's good for some things, not so for others. You need to find someone who has training and experience in your particular problem.

Also... Make sure they have professional qualifications and insurance.

I used this one:

i thought she was excellent

Like I said, it depends what you want to see a hypnotherapist for, really. They all have specialisms.

Ive seen one that changed my life, literally.

Id been suffering crippling anxiety and panic attacks for years.
I had agraphobia and had to take valium to even get to the first appointment.

The treatment was amazing, Ive never looked back.

MaureenShit · 16/01/2013 16:12

Wrong topic

HollyTheHedgehog · 16/01/2013 16:13

Also my one was in Hove. Bit of a mission from Landan.

Moominsarehippos · 16/01/2013 16:17

Check out the qualifications and level of these.

Don't agree to a series of sessions - a therapist will be able to tell you upfront if they expect you to take 2 or 10 sessions, and I have come across some who ask for payment upfront for six sessions. Usually it's a session by session bases. Ask questions and talk to them beforehand - you may just dislike them as a person, and that can hinder the treatment.

Ali Campbell.....very good

isolda1982 · 16/01/2013 16:25

I saw one who was very nice and only charged for the one session and said I should see them 3-4 times.

I however do not feel that anything has changed. They also put me in a "hypnotic state" (can't remember what they called it) but I don't feel I was any different from my normal state.

I didn't go in spectical but willing to be helped - just don't think it did.

I went through a long list of registered, qualified therapists but it is hard to know which one is better than another.

I don't want to waste money on someone who isn't good.

The hypnotic state is just being very very relaxed. You know it's working because you bounce out of the room and sleep like a log the first night.

It's not always cut and dried - some 'simple' problems can be like opening up a can of worms, so,take longer, but some major problems can be 'fixed' quickly. It depends on the patient, how good/tuned in the therapist is, and if there are any other underlying problems that need to be sorted.

glastocat · 16/01/2013 16:43

I can't help with a personal recommendation, but I have bought some downloads off hypnosisdownloads dot com and can recommend them highly, I have found them incredibly helpful for all sorts of things. I am not affiliated in any way!

I went to see this lady recently, she is most excellent but she is also pricey:
Kirsten

The one I'm talking about is Kirsten, if the link takes you to the main page of the website.
I've seen three hypnotherapists for different things over the past eight years, the one I saw in the middle was useless.
Also don't dismiss apps/YouTube sessions out of hand, I find them quite beneficial and a lot cheaper.

Andrewcunningham · 17/01/2013 20:51

It's pretty hard to tell how things are going to turn out.
Ask as many questions as you want over the phone and then see if you can get a free consultation to see how you feel face to face.
It's also important to iron out any misconceptions about hypnosis before you start. The bottom line is that hypnotherapy is a mixture of suggestion, visualisation and relaxation, there is no 'trance' in the way we might expect.
Best of luck.
