to want to buy something I saw advertised on a shopping channel?

The other day I (inadvertently) watched an ad on a shopping channel. It was for a new ceramic frying pan and I must say it looked marvellous. I am battling with the shame of actually falling for the shite they spout on these ads. At one point the guy actually banged the frying pan with a hammer to test its durability. Quality advertising at its best. I am off to order one now...

Don't do it! Stay strong.

YorkshireDeb · 16/01/2013 12:50

Not at all. I love shopping channels & am tempted to buy everything I see on them. Fortunately I have always managed to dissuade myself from picking up the phone with my credit card in my hand. X

Ah but you don't understand Cosietoesie, you can hit it with an actual hammer, a hammer I say!
Plus you get a free lid!!!!!!!!!!

I've seen that one! With the strange little fat chef guy I love that bloody frying pan Blush I really really really want one but don't want to pay that stupid amount.

PeachActiviaMinge · 16/01/2013 13:12

Now you've set me off Grin These get really amazing reviews here and they're a 7 piece set for £100 might be a better idea than just the frying pan.

YANBU i am desperate for an x5 steam cleaner... Positively yearning I am!

Allice · 16/01/2013 13:31

My H and I were desperate for the x5, we started watching the infomercial the other day to take the piss out of the guy's accent and within 10 seconds we were convinced.

We even had conversations that started "once we get the X5.... but then H googled it to see if he could get it cheaper and the reviews were terrible.

We're both still in mourning.

CrispyHedgeHogmanay · 16/01/2013 13:47

Ebay.. you'll find them for half the price.

cozietoesie · 16/01/2013 14:00

Karcher. I bought one and although it took me several months to pluck up the courage to use it, I'm now an addict. (I wait for the postie bringing me extra attachments.) Even the SIL is jealous of my sparkling tiling!

OhlimpPricks · 16/01/2013 14:04

If you are going to buy from a shopping channel, use QVC. At least you have a 30 money back guarantee and can return for a full refund, whatever the reason. I recently bought one of those No no hair removers. Luckily I was able to return it because it was no good.

PartTimeModel · 16/01/2013 14:06

I want to buy pretty much anything I see on these silly channels - they are very good at what they do.
I only brought something once - skincare - and had a (very rare for me) allergic reaction to it. I don't care what Oprah says it's shite!!!

Which helps me never to buy anything again.

Flavorstone Grin

Just get a really goo non stick pan - it really isn't anything special.

ChuffMuffin · 16/01/2013 16:05

I used to love watching the jewellery channels, they spout so much bullshit about their pieces, over price them and give the most ridiculous back stories. I always eventually ended up wanting something though! Blush

shockers · 16/01/2013 16:13

I saw an Aerobed on a shopping channel one night when I couldn't sleep (it's brilliant, a heavy duty blow up divan for when we have guests). I didn't order it that night, but I googled it the next day and it was in a promotion on its own website... almost half the price it had been on the shopping channel!

valiumredhead · 16/01/2013 17:07

Pretty much everything on the shopping channels end up on ebay or in Pound stretcher Wink

ChuffMuffin · 16/01/2013 17:27

Have you seen this? Grin

NotMyBigFatFault · 16/01/2013 17:30

Shopping channels aren't all bad! Many of them let you try it for 30 days and send it back used. I have done this on many occasions. Sometimes scrupulously, sometimes not! Check their terms and conditions (in any case you have 7 days no quibbls due to the distance selling regulations 2000) however many offer much better terms than this and allow you to try products in your home, which departments stores do not! That said, often you may pay for return postage; however, many times the reason they offer this no quibbles return is the confidence in their product. I can count on my hand the amount of times I've returned items; generally they deliver and are kept.

NotMyBigFatFault · 16/01/2013 17:32

The times I have sent things back have been clothes and jewellery; very personal things that you don't always realise aren't "you" until you wear them. And Makeup. (QVC). If you buy something from Benefit in Debenhams, tough shit if you hate it. Buy it from QVC, use it for 4 weeks and send it back! Same with that pair of earrings that just don't do it for you. Etc.
