AIBU to not want my bank to give information to my sister/parents?

I live in England but have a German bank account. It is registered to my parents address my old address and my sister also lives at home with them. I thought I had cancelled all my DD, but forget one and as I don't have any money in this current account it was returned. The bank charged me 8? for this. All the statements go to my parents address and my mother never told me that she received any letters. We don't have a very good relationship. However the bank has my UK address, as well as email address etc. So it is not lie they could not have contacted me first. One of the staff members phoned my old number parents landline and my sister answered. The lady asked if I was at home and my sister said 'No she doesn't live here anymore since 2007'. She then told my sister about my overdrawn account of 8? and that she shall call me.

I am not happy about this at all. They should have contacted me first, which they could have easily done. I know it is only 8? but still, even if it was 1p. They are not allowed to share my confidential information and they shouldn't do so.

Would IBU to contact the bank manager about this?

YANBU. I think this is a breach of confidentiality. X

Nope, they broke data protection so you should definitely complain.

German rules about Data Protection might be different, but I'm sure they would not allow this. Maybe 3 or 6 months of mail redirection, just to make sure there is nothing else going to your old address?

Yanbu

TidyDancer · 16/01/2013 12:51

Are they subject to the same data protection rules the UK is though? Not that I'm saying what they did was right, because obviously it isn't, but I don't know if a complaint will get you anywhere if they didn't technically do anything 'wrong'.

Can you not remove that address and phone number from your account?

MissNJE · 16/01/2013 12:57

I can't say if the data protection law is the same as in the UK but they are not allowed to share any information. The 8? overdrawn fee was taken at the beginning of January, so just two weeks ago. Unfortunately I can not remove the address from the bank account as a) I need to have a German address for this account b) I am still registered in Germany and everybody needs a residence. The place of residence is even written on our ID.
I don't want to close the account either.

The Data protection rules in Germany are different, as are the banking rules. Contact the bank, pay off the overdraft and apologise for not letting them know you no longer lived there. Most German banks won't let you retain an account if you're not paying money into it every month, they are franchises so can't afford to have unused accounts to service. I know that Sparkasse will close a dormant account after 6 months, and keep any money in it.

CaptChaos I use the account regularly and yes I am a Sparkasse customer. I often send money from my UK account to my German account and withdraw it when I am in Germany. I regularly once every six weeks or so check my online banking too.
