I started a trial period with an agency on new years eve. The trial was for four weeks after which they would review sales targets and decide whether to sign me or not.

Today they said I have been unsuccessful in my trial period.

I have asked why but think I must have done something really wrong , the sales haven't been brilliant - no one at all has been making targets, but I've hit the same ammounts as other girls who've been there longer - Friday was dire and even the managers didn't make targets. I sold the same amount as the other girl there even though my shift was at least two hours shorter, so I'm now thinking I must have really fucked up, I have replied saying I am sorry to hear that and said can I ask why for future reference, but I can't shake this feeling especially as they didn't even give me the four weeks, and my sales have matched others - january is the worst month for this job so I'm sure there is more to it..

I suppose what i'm asking is would you think the same?

No, I'm afraid I'd assume they wanted to cut staff and you were the easiest to get rid of, as you were only on a trial. Unethical of them, but I doubt it reflects on you personally.

I'd want to know more from the agency, but if your sales are as good as the others maybe there was a personality class with someone?

DizzyZebra · 15/01/2013 23:46

Squinkies - They seemed friendly enough, in fact i really got on well with everyone i met! Nice ladies, Eager to answer anyones questions etc, Fair and seemingly reasonable minded.

I don't think it's cuts as they're still advertising for staff?

I think I'd wonder who I'd upset tbh Confused

It could be that they only ever take people on a trial basis and unless they are absolutely shit hot and treble targets they lay them off at the end. It is much cheaper to get staff like that - the job centre and adverts will keep people coming and trying their very best because the firm holds out the hope of a job, and they actually have no intention of giving any of them one. They just lay off and sign up the next bunch of hopefuls for a month Confused
Los of firms round here do it, and do things like lay every member of staff off on december 20th and re-employ them on january 2nd to avoid paying holiday pay. It lets them get away without having to pay other stuff too, everyone is temporary or part time, or sub contracted. Some people have been there 10 years on a rolling two week contract with a break every august and december Confused

Sounds like a well known employer round here. Everyone is signed up on a trial basis (which varies from 4 weeks to 3 months) and nobody ever gets taken on permanently. Sales targets are rarely met by everyone but whether you stay or go depends entirely on when your trial period is up. Not the targets you meet. Staff turnover is huge but there's always a ready supply of staff even though the company reputation is well known.

So I'd not assume you'd done anything bad at all, OP. It's just that your time was up.
