To be really struggling to come up with potential role models for dn?

Slightly embarrassed that I'm struggling to come up with anything, hoping someone will come along with some bright ideas :)

Ideally someone she can look up to of a similar background to her- though it's an obscure one (Ghanaian/Iranian) so I am aware we may have to compromise! Her mums trying to encourage her to take pride in her heritage, she's adamant there's no one she can look up to under that criteria and there's no such thing as a 'positive' female role model who appeals to her and whom her mum is going to view as appropriate, let alone from a similar ethnic background to her. Is she right or does mn have any bright ideas? Grin

Does it matter?

I never had 'role models' as such when I was growing up but there were plenty of people in my everyday life who I admired a lot.

My old Doctor and Head teacher are two who spring to mind.

Oh and my Aunt Nellie Grin

Precisely what worra. Does it matter? I'm not sure I've ever had or needed a 'role model' but if I had it would have been on the basis of achievement not ethnicity. Let the child start with family and friends before teaching her to look to someone she doesn't know.

My Aunt Nellie would never have missed the word said from her post Sad

Hopeandbluebells · 15/01/2013 22:19

It doesn't matter as such no- but she's got to give a presentation to her English class on her role model, she's a teenager so family are obviously too embarrassing Grin and she was saying she wants someone of a similar background to do it on by there isn't anyone. So it's not the end I the world, but it would be nice to be able to come up with something :)

Can there be such a thing as an instant role model?

WorraLiberty · 15/01/2013 22:24

If she's a teenager who does't have any kind of role model by now, I'm not sure there's any point in 'making one up' so to speak?

I don't mean 'making one up' as such...but I can't see how her quickly reading some Google blurb on someone is going to make her see them as a role model all of a sudden.

I'd advise her to look around her in RL...I'm sure there are plenty of people she admires and would aspire to be like regardless of their heritage.

Any family members?

In case you missed it first time, I'll try again: Camila Batmanghelidjh

WorraLiberty · 15/01/2013 22:25

Or what CheCazzo said...using just 11 words Blush Hmm

Trills · 15/01/2013 22:25

she's got to give a presentation to her English class on her role model

How about a presentation on how people can be inspirational without being particularly like you?

Hopeandbluebells · 15/01/2013 22:35

Ohhh well i think camila batmanghelidjh is a great choice cheesestrawwars, I'll suggest her to dn :)

I completely agree theres not really much point making up a role model at this age, but ultimately she has to do her English presentation and she's said ideally she wants someone of a similar background to her, that's her choice. But checazzo I do agree with you.
