men have incontinence right? there are male incontinence products? why are all the ads of women getting into embarassing knicker flashy situations? why no men?

OP posts:

I think it's widely known that childbirth can cause incontinence. Women who give birth aren't old women! They have to be sold a product that doesn't make them feel aged, but does the job they need it to do.

DameMargotFountain · 15/01/2013 21:46

yup, it's all about the money isn't it?

i pressed 'post' too soon on my last message, but you get my drift?

womens incontinence aids (yes, i'm talking pads here, OP Wink ) are marketed the same as beauty products, it taps into our vanity

DameMargotFountain · 15/01/2013 21:47

Fake you read Heston's post?

that

Fakebook · 15/01/2013 21:50

There must be some kind of criteria to be met to have that operation. I don't think they'd offer it to a woman who has a minor problem. Happy to be told I'm wrong.

LesBOFerables · 15/01/2013 21:53

Because advertising aimed at women focuses on their insecurities, whereas that aimed at men focuses on enhancing their awesomeness (possibly a sweeping generalisation). Wink.

DameMargotFountain · 15/01/2013 21:55

if you're so incontinent you need to wear a pad, you should see your GP, really

it can be fixed

chibi · 15/01/2013 21:56

pissing yourself is so minor and inconsequential if you are a woman because we all know what leaky things they are. best not to waste NHS resources on fixing it when women can just be shamed into buying their on pads to soil

being expected to piss yourself and just have to deal with it would be seriously dehumanising if it happened to men.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 15/01/2013 21:58

lesB and chibi say it so well!

Yes, this is infuriating.

LesBOFerables · 15/01/2013 22:01

I just looked up the clinical research on TVT, and it says "...in 92% of cases conservative management was tried and had failed before surgery was considered. For the TVT operation patients reported a high subjective cure rate, with 95% either fully cured or showing substantial improvement in their condition."

So it sounds like they advocate Kegels etc first.

But I'm sure it's worth knowing that if this is an issue for you, a trip to the GP will probably be better than spending a fortune on commercially-available pads, and that the root cause can be addressed. I think the adverts for pads play on women's embarrassment about seeing the doctor in the first place.

Fakebook · 15/01/2013 22:09

Thanks LesBOF. That's what I thought. By minor problem I did mean something that could be cured with pelvic floor exercises.

chibi · 15/01/2013 22:20

maybe they can stop prescribing viagra and use the moneys saved to fund tvt and make women aware that it is available.

impotent men can then have special underwear targetted at them that can mask their inability to achieve and or maintain erections, complete with shaming adverts

win win win

That link was ace BOF Grin

Yes I just wanted to add that I had had eight years of pissing myself with doing pelvic floors etc. I never used those incontinence pads, but suddenly the kids were older and I thought "Oh, I can spare myself the time to do something about this".

The worst bit was the urodynamics test to make sure I really did need the op. The op itself was fine and the gynaecologist was a lovely man, who laughed along with the nurse when he asked how long I had been pissing myself for and I replied "eight years". I think he believed I had had long enough pissing myself.

I can even go on the trampoline now.

Hope this helps anyone else out there with a problem.
